We're closing out American Heart Month with Prisma Health patient, Johnny Taylor of Hartsville, who recently celebrated 10 successful years of living with a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, used to treat patients with advanced heart failure. One night in January 2015, Johnny’s wife Cheryl said she found him lying against the bathroom wall. They immediately went to their local hospital and were transferred to Prisma Health Richland Hospital by EMS within just a few hours. There, Dr. Patrick Joseph McCann, a heart failure cardiologist, recommended Johnny have an LVAD placed. A few days later, Johnny went back to the local hospital for a similar problem and was again transferred to Richland Hospital, this time by helicopter. After a 9-hour surgery to place the LVAD and five long weeks in the hospital, Johnny was cleared to go home. “They did wonders, those two,” said Cheryl of Dr. McCann and Dr. Jeffery Martin, Johnny’s cardiothoracic surgeon. “He wouldn’t be here without them and God.” Johnny said he must take extensive care to ensure his LVAD is functioning properly. “I’m proud of myself. I have to treat that thing like a baby: walk with it, eat with it,” Johnny said. He said it’s been a long journey, but he’s grateful for his doctors. “I appreciate what they did. They care a lot.” Last week, Dr. Martin and his nurse Katie, surprised Johnny at his 10-year LVAD celebration with other Prisma Health employees and community members. Katie, who had taught Cheryl how to care for Johnny’s wound, was there to celebrate with them. #PrismaHealthHeartMonth #PrismaHealthCardiology #AmericanHeartMonth
