In 2021, the Privacy Scorecard emerged as a transformative and essential tool in the realm of data protection compliance monitoring. Initially aimed at evaluating the practices of data collectors in Uganda, this innovative mechanism has rapidly evolved, transcending geographical boundaries and various legal jurisdictions, thereby making a substantial impact on a global scale. Each successive edition of the Privacy Scorecard has expanded its purview significantly: - The inaugural edition concentrated solely on key data collection practices within Uganda, setting the groundwork for rigorous analysis. - In the 2nd edition, the focus broadened to include Kenya, reflecting an understanding of the regional importance of data privacy. - The 3rd edition further encompassed Mauritius and Zimbabwe, highlighting the urgency and relevance of data protection across diverse landscapes. With the launch of the 4th edition, we reach a significant milestone, as it now evaluates the data protection practices of six countries: Rwanda, Tanzania, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Uganda. This expanded framework not only showcases the Privacy Scorecard’s escalating influence but also emphasizes a commitment to fostering best practices in data protection. It empowers citizens to demand greater transparency and accountability from organizations regarding the collection and utilization of their personal data. The guiding principle behind this initiative is both straightforward and powerful: “𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐭, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐭.” This foundational tenet is crucial for ensuring that those who collect and process data adhere to ethical standards. It seeks to establish a climate of trust between consumers and data custodians, reinforcing the safeguarding of privacy rights across the globe. Let us collectively strive to instigate positive changes in the data protection terrain. By holding companies accountable for their practices, we can ensure that the personal data of individuals is respected and protected, contributing to a more secure future for everyone. #Privacy #DataProtection #Compliance #DataRights #GlobalImpact #PrivacyScorecard #Transparency #EthicalDataHandling #Trust

Tamanda Kamundi, we are deeply grateful for your profound reflections and for being a key part of #PSA2024! It was a pleasure to have you attend the 6th Privacy Symposium in Harare, Zimbabwe. We’re delighted that you found the sessions valuable, particularly on topics like "Privacy in the Age of Social Media: Are We Oversharing?" Discussions like these truly highlight the challenges we face in protecting our privacy in today’s digital world. We also appreciate your mention of the 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘈𝘤𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘸𝘪 and the role of MACRA in ensuring Data Subjects are informed about their rights. As you rightly pointed out, there is much more to be done to raise awareness and ensure that all stakeholders—Data Controllers, Processors, and Regulators—work together to protect privacy across the continent. Your enthusiasm for data privacy and protection is inspiring, and congratulations on your graduation from the POTRAZ and HIT DPO Certification Course—what an achievement! We look forward to your continued contributions and can’t wait to see you at the next symposium. Thank you once again for being part of this important conversation and for all you do to advance data privacy and protection in Africa. Let’s keep pushing boundaries and navigating the digital age responsibly. #PSA2024 #PrivacyMatters #DataProtection #DigitalDemocracy #DPO #CyberSecurity #DigitalRights #Africa
I had the honor of attending the 6th Privacy Symposium in Harare, Zimbabwe, a three-day event centered on the theme "Bridging Policy, Technology, and Societal Dynamics." This gathering was a valuable opportunity for data protection and privacy professionals across Africa to connect, exchange insights, and address emerging challenges in the evolving landscape of privacy. One session that stood out to me was on the topic "Privacy in the Age of Social Media: Are We Oversharing?" In today’s digital world, it's crucial to understand how our online actions impact our privacy and the need to be thoughtful about what we share. With the recent enactment of the Data Protection Act in Malawi that designated the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) as the Data Protection Authority, it is vital that Data Subjects are aware of their rights under the Act, including the right to access, correct, and request the deletion of personal data. I encourage all stakeholders, from Data Controllers to Processors, to engage with MACRA to ensure these rights are upheld and compliance with the Act is prioritized. While data privacy and protection have gained more attention across Africa, there remains a significant knowledge gap. It’s crucial that we make intentional efforts to raise awareness about privacy rights and data protection across the continent. The symposium included valuable discussions with Data Protection Regulators on how to tackle this challenge. The symposium also provided key insights into the intersection of data protection and elections. As Malawi approaches its elections, ensuring data protection throughout the electoral process is essential to safeguard individuals' rights and ensure compliance from Data Controllers and Processors. I’m also thrilled to share that I graduated from the POTRAZ and HIT DPO Certification Course during the symposium! 🎓 I look forward to contributing as a speaker at the next symposium. Let’s continue advancing the cause of data privacy and protection and ensure we navigate the digital age with responsibility! 🔐 #PrivacySymposiumAfrica

Melissa Chasi, thank you so much for your thoughtful reflections on #PSA2024! It was an absolute pleasure to have you on the panel alongside Tinotenda Chishiri, Farisai Chaniwa, and other experts, expertly moderated by Upenyu Makoni-Muchemwa. Your contribution to the discussion on “𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢’𝘴 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘋𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘺” was incredibly valuable and highlighted critical aspects of how we manage voter data in the digital age. Your insights on how African countries can learn from the Council of Europe, along with your emphasis on ensuring lawful and transparent data practices in political campaigns, were spot on. As you mentioned, it is vital that Data Protection Authorities continue to support electoral bodies in creating and maintaining ethical data management systems, which are crucial for building voter trust and protecting their rights. We are grateful for your participation and for bringing such an important perspective to the table. The conversation we began at #PSA2024 will undoubtedly inspire continued progress toward more grounded and ethical data protection frameworks in Africa’s digital democracies. We look forward to the future of these discussions and to collaborating again! Thank you for being part of this landmark event! #PSA2024 #DigitalDemocracy #DataProtection #VoterRights #ElectionData #PrivacyMatters #Africa #PublicTrust
On Day 2 of the Privacy Symposium Africa , I joined a panel with Tinotenda Chishiri , Farisai Chaniwa and others moderated by Upenyu Makoni-Muchemwa of Accountability Lab Zimbabwe , discussing “Complexities of Election Data Management in Africa’s Digital Democracy.” I focused on how African countries can learn from the Council of Europe, which guides electoral bodies and political parties on responsibly managing voters’ personal data. In today’s digital age, political campaigns depend on understanding voters—what we care about and believe in. However, this raises crucial questions about how our data is collected, processed, and protected. Political parties must ensure data is lawfully acquired, and voters should not feel surprised or misinformed when contacted. Under Zimbabwe’s Cyber and Data Protection Act, political opinions are sensitive information requiring high security to prevent voter suppression or intimidation. Data Protection Authorities must support electoral bodies and political parties to ensure ethical data practices, which build trust and protect voter rights. Safeguarding personal data is essential for trust in elections. As digital democracy evolves, so must our regulatory frameworks. #Privacy Symposium Africa #Privacy Practitioners Association of Zimbabwe #ElectionData #DataProtection

It was an enriching experience to be part of the 6th edition of the Privacy Symposium Africa (PSA), held this November in the ‘Sunshine City’—Harare, Zimbabwe. The symposium brought together data privacy and protection enthusiasts, ICT experts, policymakers, civil society representatives, lawyers, and other stakeholders from across the continent to explore the latest developments and challenges in the field. This year’s conversations centered around Election Data Governance, addressing crucial aspects of personal data collection, processing, storage, and usage in African electoral processes. Through a dynamic mix of masterclasses, captivating panel discussions, and stakeholder engagements, the 6th edition—dubbed #PSA2024— successfully ignited and reignited important conversations around data protection and privacy in Africa. Like previous editions, it maintained the trend of laying the foundations for the development of efficient data protection frameworks across the continent. As a member of the organising team from Unwanted Witness Uganda, the journey was a blend of fun, challenges, and invaluable lessons. It was deeply fulfilling—a learning curve I can leverage for future opportunities. My responsibilities were diverse and demanding. I worked tirelessly to keep the PSA website (https://lnkd.in/d7qHb9Vq) updated with the latest event information. I ran effective email marketing campaigns to engage registered participants and ensure they stayed informed about key symposium highlights and information. I also spearheaded interactive social media campaigns that built anticipation and sustained hype around the event. Months of hard work, learning, and unlearning have been immeasurably rewarding. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of social media and email marketing dynamics and honed my skills in growing an online presence for a brand. The online growth my team and I achieved—both in the lead-up to and during the event—was a testament to the power of strategic digital campaigns. From a participant’s perspective, the symposium was equally enlightening. This year, I’ve immersed myself in data privacy and protection, and the discussions at #PSA2024 were real eye-openers. Key takeaways included how to safeguard personal information on social media, protect workplace data, understand privacy rights, and navigate the evolving landscape of data protection and privacy across Africa. In addition to these lessons, I had the privilege of connecting with talented individuals from diverse backgrounds in data protection and IT—fields I am continuously growing in. These connections hold immense promise for the future, and I’m excited about what lies ahead. My heartfelt gratitude goes to Unwanted Witness Uganda and my incredible teammates for making #PSA2024 a success. I look forward to being part of next year’s edition. 𝐏.𝐒. Zimbabwe is such a beautiful country—add it to your travel bucket list!😅

Thank you Nkosikhona Polo Sibanda for partnering with us and playing a key role in making #PSA2024 such a success. Your involvement and contributions helped steer the event towards meaningful discussions and made it memorable. A key takeaway from our discussions was the powerful sentiment shared: “𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴.” This statement perfectly encapsulates the importance of developing tailored solutions that address the unique challenges and opportunities of the African continent. As we work to bridge policies, technology, and societal dynamics, we believe that these discussions will foster ongoing progress in data privacy and protection. Together, we aim to create lasting and meaningful solutions for Africa. We look forward to continuing this journey with you and seeing the positive outcomes of our collective efforts. #DataPrivacy #TechForAfrica #AfricanSolutions #PrivacyMatters #PSA2024 #DataProtection
So I spoke at the #PSA2024. Our panel discussion was the Privacy Mishaps: Funny Stories from the Workplace on Wednesday 20 November 2024, Day 2. This moment was a full circle moment for me. My data privacy journey started 6 years ago. All the troughs, the roses, the mud, the petals and the pats got me to this very moment right here. It was an amazing panel. Intriguing conversation. I am grateful to Unwanted Witness Uganda and MISA Zimbabwe for the invite, more grateful to Edith Utete for pointing me out in the crowd and to the Almighty God for preparing me for this moment. I am forever humbled by the process, and more honoured to have been part of this year's Privacy Symposium Africa . I am certainly looking forward to many more. Just a quick preview: I spoke, among other things, about the importance of ECPs (electronic communication policies) in the workplace, and the balance between an employee's rights (right to privacy and right to freedom of expression) and the employer's competing rights [right to a good name, right to preservation of company's brand, right to profitability, etc, which I amplify here]. It is important for an employer to always bear in mind the importance of balancing these competiting rights. This is a conversation worth exploring further. #dataprivacyintheworkplace #dataprivacy #PSA2024
