A single habit that changed the course of my entire career My mother loved reading books, magazines, newspapers, and anything else she could get her hands on. I grew up in a household where, if my father was home, the television would be permanently tuned to the news. For a child, the happenings of the world hold little interest. As kids, we wanted to create, explore, and learn new things. My mother found a brilliant way to channel this energy. When we were bored, she encouraged me and my two siblings to read. At first, it felt like studying, something we naturally resisted. But as we stuck with it, reading became something we truly enjoyed. Summers were spent renting comic books and storybooks, immersing ourselves in their vibrant worlds. I didn’t realize it back then, but this habit gave me a powerful gift—the ability to imagine beyond boundaries. For instance, if a story mentioned “a boy sitting under a tree,” I would picture a 10-year-old boy under a neem tree. My sister might imagine a 2-year-old boy under a banyan tree. My brother might envision a 6-year-old boy under a eucalyptus tree. That’s the magic of reading—it hands you the wand to create limitless possibilities. Although I don’t read as much anymore, my mother's foundation developed my ability to dream, visualize, and ultimately create. I owe my career and my work entirely to her. Overcoming FOMO in #Systematicreviews: 6 practical tips When doing a systematic literature review and meta-analysis, it's common to worry if you've included all the important studies. To avoid missing any key research papers, here are 6 helpful tips. 🟩Set a clear search date range for the papers you include For example, choose from January 1, 2000, to November 31, 2024. This makes it clear that no papers published after this period are included. 🟩Use structured keywords This helps you cross-reference and ensures the keywords match the studies you need, reducing gaps in your search. 🟩Follow PRISMA guidelines and ensure you've included all updated research papers. 🟩Use Google Scholar's "cited by" feature to find related studies worth considering. 🟩During the publication process, if a reviewer recommends adding more papers or updating the search date, conduct additional research to identify and include the suggested articles. 🟩Lastly, double-check with AI tools like ChatPDF, Scispace, and Litmaps. These tools can help you go beyond common databases for a thorough literature search. Did you know that while all MEDLINE-indexed journals are part of PubMed, not all PubMed-indexed journals are included in MEDLINE? PubMed hosts a broader range of content, including articles from PubMed Central (PMC) and other repositories. MEDLINE specifically indexes journals that meet stringent quality and scientific standards set by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). 🔵How to check Journal Indexing 🟩Using NLM Catalog (National Library of Medicine Catalog) 1. Visit the NLM Catalog Website Go to the NLM Catalog at https://lnkd.in/gKzuCDqV. 2. Search for the Journal: Enter the journal's title, ISSN, or abbreviation into the search bar. Click Search. 3. Check the Indexing Information Look for the section titled "Current Indexing Status" or "Indexed for MEDLINE". If the journal is indexed in PubMed or MEDLINE, it will explicitly mention "Indexed for MEDLINE" or "PubMed – indexed for MEDLINE." If it states "Not currently indexed for MEDLINE," the journal is not indexed. Have you ever struggled to find the exact sources cited in a #ChatGPT-generated response? You’re not alone! AI tools like ChatGPT sometimes generate citations that look real but actually don't exist. This happens because ChatGPT isn’t connected to the internet, so it can’t verify sources. Sometimes, ChatGPT might suggest an author who frequently writes on your topic or a journal that covers related research, but the specifics like titles, year, page numbers, and dates are often fictional. You can double-check by searching in tools like Google Scholar, and other databases, but there's a good chance the sources aren’t real. Instead, here’s how to get the most from ChatGPT 🟩Brainstorm ideas and overcome creative blocks 🟩Get feedback on your writing and helpful edits 🟩Explain complex ideas at various difficulty levels 🟩Summarize lengthy articles or chapters In short, ChatGPT is fantastic for generating ideas and refining your work but less reliable when it comes to finding real-world sources. AI for Fake Paper Detection: Can AI Outsmart Research Fraudsters? "Paper mills" are companies or groups that produce fake or low-quality scientific papers for a fee, often using fabricated data, plagiarized content, or entirely fictional research. These papers are then sold to researchers who may need publications for academic or career advancement but lack the means or time to conduct genuine research. Data reveals that these fake studies could compromise 24% of medical literature, which is an alarming statistic for the scientific community. It highlights the need for rigorous peer review and better systems to detect and prevent scientific fraud in academic publishing. 🟩AI to our rescue 🔵AI in Fake Paper Detection Artificial intelligence (AI) may be key in identifying fake papers from "paper mills." 🔵GPT-2 Output Detector’s Effectiveness The GPT-2 Output Detector is highly effective for spotting fake content. A recent study showed that it is better than existing plagiarism detection tools like Plagiarism Detector, iThenticate, and even human reviewers. 🔵Some publishers, like Taylor & Francis, are also developing their own detection tools to ensure authenticity in submissions. It’s only a matter of time before AI becomes capable of reliably detecting fake or AI-generated content and verifying content authenticity. Arxiv: Pre-print server (The Unfiltered World of Research) 🟩What is arXiv? A free online repository for research papers Primarily for physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, and statistics Allows researchers to share their work before formal peer review 🟩How is arXiv Different from Journal Publication? Speed: arXiv allows for rapid dissemination of research findings. Accessibility: Papers on arXiv are freely accessible to the public. Pre-Peer Review: Papers are not peer-reviewed before being posted, which can lead to errors or unsubstantiated claims. Less Rigorous: The review process on arXiv is less stringent compared to traditional journal publication. 🟩Benefits of ArXiv Accelerates Scientific Progress: Speeds up the dissemination of new ideas and discoveries. Open Access: Promotes open science and democratizes access to research. 🔵While arXiv is a valuable tool for researchers, it's important to exercise caution when interpreting pre-print papers.
