The UN’s approach to the Myanmar crisis, including the actions of the new Special Envoy, Julie Bishop, is fundamentally flawed and dangerously ineffective. The international community's continued reliance on "impartial" diplomacy, including meetings with Myanmar's brutal military junta, risks legitimizing the perpetrators of atrocities and undermines the genuine efforts of the Myanmar people fighting for freedom and justice. The UN must move beyond empty rhetoric and urgently support the people's revolution for a federal democracy, holding the junta accountable for its crimes and prioritizing human rights over political expediency. It is utterly shameful that ASEAN allowed the murderous junta to host the 42nd ASEANAPOL Conference on transnational crime in Naypyidaw from 21–25 October, with the international community in attendance, despite the junta's ongoing mass atrocities. How much more brutality must the people of Myanmar endure for the world to take their lives seriously and prove it through concrete action? In recent weeks, the military junta’s horrifying and unspeakable violence has devastated Myanmar’s communities—from Budalin Township, Sagaing Region, to northern Shan State—as the world looks on without lifting a finger. The international community holds the tools to incapacitate the military junta and save the lives of Myanmar’s peoples. It’s high time for the world to impose a targeted embargo on arms, aviation fuel, aircraft, and other dual-use goods to the Myanmar military.
