Using AI to advance sustainable breeding programs in aquaculture

About us

Today, to remain competitive and address sustainability and resilience challenges in the sector, the genetic improvement of three essential traits can help French aquaculture breeders stand out. These traits are (1) fillet yield, (2) feed efficiency, and (3) disease resistance. The project aims to facilitate the genetic improvement of these major traits for French breeders. To achieve this goal, we will create and deploy high-throughput phenotyping tools (trait measurement) using artificial intelligence directly in the field. To achieve this goal, a collaboration between private companies and research institutions has been established. The SEPIAA project brings together SYSAAF (project leader), Viviers de Sarrance, Aqualande, Bretagne Truite, Ecloserie Marine de Gravelines, Vendée Naissain, as well as leading research institutes such as INRAE, Ifremer, and Anses. This partnership leverages the expertise of industry and science to develop innovative, AI-driven solutions for sustainable breeding in aquaculture. SEPIAA has received funding from the French government as part of the France 2030 plan, managed by Bpifrance.
