When should you name competitors in your marketing? Here’s a simple framework for SaaS companies : Most companies are too quick to name-drop competitors, thinking it will help prospects draw comparisons. But you should name competitors only if 80%+ of your market knows them. If your audience is already aware of a competitor, mentioning them positions you as a relevant option. They’re comparing you anyway—so leaning into that context can give you the edge. For instance, when I was working with Will Royall from PromoTix, they decided to call out that they were 20-40% cheaper than Eventbrite. This resulted in 40% more signups for them with the same amount of traffic! This competitive positioning is powerful if you truly are significantly better than the competition in at least one meaningful way to your ICP. But if fewer than 20% know the competitor, you’re essentially giving them free exposure. The last thing you want to do is build your competitor’s brand. So, what do you do? Challenge the status quo. In most markets, your biggest competitor isn't another tool. It’s often an outdated process or the “old way” of doing things. For many SaaS companies, that means targeting the inefficiencies and frustrations that come from those outdated approaches is a more practical approach. Case in point: A founder I work with offers a tool that makes it easier to sell visually. But their real competitor isn’t other software that does the same thing (though they do have a few competitors that do the same thing)... Their real competitor is the long, tedious process of manually creating proposals. 80%+ of their market still does things the old-fashioned way. In this case, your ICP needs to see how much easier and faster it is to close deals with a tool designed for the job. TLDR; Be strategic about who—or what—you’re competing against.

Will Royall’s Vision to Lower Event Costs and Improve Marketing for Event Creators Will Royall, CEO of PromoTix, is helping event creators save on fees and increase ticket sales with innovative marketing tools. Discover how PromoTix is disrupting the event ticketing industry with lower fees and a platform designed for modern event marketing. Every customer has already experienced the painful experience of seeing that the price at checkout is higher than the advertised price because of high hidden fees. Unfortunately, Ticketmaster, the event ticketing giant, is a master at adding a fee of around 30% to every ticket it sells. To help event organizers increase their revenues and help more attendees afford events, Promotix is offering patented marketing tools for a low fee of only about 3%. We interviewed the founder and CEO, Will Royall, to better understand how he navigates the challenges of growing a two-sided marketplace. To learn more about Will and his vision, check out the Kingscrowd article in the link below: https://buff.ly/4hvJ4NZ
