I read Dr. Neufeld's profoundly sad and tragic story previously, and the detailed account leading up to his suicide is difficult to read. There are too many lives lost to suicide in healthcare and it is not limited to physicians. In the words of Jeffrey Pfeffer, whom I had the privilege of speaking to in the summer of 2022 on the topic of toxic leadership in healthcare, "The CEO of any hospital where a physician dies by suicide because of workplace abuse should be charged with homicide." If you're in a leadership role in a healthcare organization and you remain silent while clinicians suffer, you are part of the problem and have blood on your hands. If you're a past or present leader of physicians and you acknowledge ignoring the cries of those you directed; come clean and apologize publicly. To those former 'leaders' who monetize the pain of physicians and all those who have lost their lives; shame on you. Time's up. 💔 "Dr. J’s wish spoken in the final moments of his life: Hospitals have to do a better job at helping the doctors. We are being left out. We are being disposed of. We are being minimized. Administrations don’t communicate. They put down dictums. And I hope someone will listen to this in the future and learn from it. There definitely needs to be an investigation by the Joint Commission and a root cause analysis by the hospital association. My hospital has clearly failed and people need to understand that you have got to help more doctors. That you can’t treat us this way. It’s cruel. It’s unusual. It’s not fair. And, yes, life is not fair. I hope that maybe someone will pay attention to this because I don’t want more doctors to do what I am about to do. On a global level, a study published in BMJ Oncology journal last year revealed that, between 1990 and 2019, there was a 79% surge in incidence of early-onset cancer and 27% higher number of early-onset cancer deaths. Cancers previously seen as more common in older age groups are increasingly diagnosed in younger adults. Examples include breast, colorectal, esophageal, gastric, prostate, pancreatic cancers, among others. Of particular relevance are studies conducted in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Finland, and other countries, which show the nutrient content of the global food supply has fallen significantly over the past 70 to 80 years. Suspected causes of this include the increasing worldwide shift toward industrial forms of agriculture. In some cases, reduction in nutrient levels has been dramatic. Between 1951 and 1999, for example, calcium content of broccoli in Canada fell by ~63%. Similarly, vitamin A of Canadian broccoli fell by ~56%, with vitamin B2 falling by ~43% and vitamin B1 by 40%. Changes in nutrient levels for potatoes were also concerning, with iron and vitamin C falling by >57%, vitamin B2 by 50%, vitamin B3 by 45% and, most disturbingly, vitamin A by 100%.
