🕊 During his captivity*, our Founder and Director Olivier Vandecasteele had one idea that kept him alive : “if I get out of this, I will build an NGO that advocates for better protection of the humanitarian community. A structure which will provide concrete support and expertise to those of us who survive critical incidents on the frontlines - with a particular focus on local colleagues and national NGOs”. ❤️ About 6 months ago, we kickstarted Protect Humanitarians. Never before the humanitarian sector has witnessed such levels of violence against frontline humanitarian aid workers. 📈 In 2023 alone, 595 humanitarians, mostly local colleagues, were killed (280), wounded (224), kidnapped or detained (91) - in Palestine, Sudan, Ukraine, Mali, DRC, Yemen amongst others. On behalf of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, I express our profound sadness on the loss of a Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteer, Muhannad Jakish, and the injury of other volunteers in Al-Dabousyeh and Al-Arida crossings along the Lebanon-Syria border. I extend my deepest condolences to Muhannad's family and our colleagues at the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. Since the beginning of the year, 31 IFRC network members have died globally, while performing their humanitarian duties. This is not acceptable. All humanitarian workers must be protected.

🗣️This week Abby Stoddard from Humanitarian Outcomes addressed the United Nations on the urgent need to Protect Humanitarians in conflict zones. 💬 "Not only is international humanitarian law being ignored, but even basic norms of military operations are being violated." This year (2024) has seen the highest number of casualties among humanitarian workers, underscoring the severity of the situation. 🙏 We thank Humanitarian Outcomes’ work in providing concrete data that sheds light on the #dangers faced by #HumanitarianPersonnel. Despite extreme dangers, humanitarians continue to demonstrate an incredible commitment to 'stay and deliver' to people in need, United Nations OCHA official tells the Security Council. 🇺🇳🇬🇧UK Statement at the United Nations Security Council to Protect Humanitarians 📢 During a United Nations Security Council meeting, Ambassador James Kariuki the Deputy Permanent Representative to the UK Mission to the United Nations, delivered a speech calling for better protection of humanitarian workers ⛑️ 💬 “Humanitarian workers, including national and local actors, should never be targeted for doing their jobs.
