We’re thrilled to partner with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson to announce that PsiQuantum will anchor the new Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park and build the first US-based utility-scale quantum computer in Chicago, Illinois located at the historic US Steel South Works site. With support from the State of Illinois, Cook County Government, and the City of Chicago, we’re thrilled to join the Illinois’ quantum ecosystem, including Argonne National Laboratory & Fermilab national labs, leading universities including University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Chicago, and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s newly announced Quantum Proving Ground Initiative which will also be based at the Quantum Park. In both Illinois and Australia, PsiQuantum has incredible partners who understand quantum computing's potential and the need to scale this technology. We’re grateful for this new partnership with Gov. Pritzker and the State of Illinois in support of our mission to build America’s first utility-scale quantum computer. https://lnkd.in/gx866XnQ

Building the world’s first useful quantum computer.
About us
Quantum computing will be a world-changing technology with the potential to unlock powerful advances in medicine, energy, finance and beyond. At PsiQuantum, we’re focused on building the world’s first useful quantum computer. A useful quantum computer requires at least 1,000,000 qubits and error correction. We believe photonics is the only path to building a useful quantum computer. Our team at PsiQuantum is a mix of quantum physicists, semiconductor, systems, and software engineers, system architects and more. Error correction is at the centre of everything we do; and we focus on solving real-world problems. If you’re interested in joining our team, we are always open to hearing from exceptional people interested in working on one of the defining technologies of our lifetime.

A true privilege for PsiQuantum and Pete Shadbolt to speak at #EmTechMIT, sharing a look at the company’s journey towards building the first useful quantum computers. It’s an exciting time in the industry, and we are eager to share more. Congratulations to MIT Technology Review in celebrating 125 years of uncovering and shaping the future—we can’t wait to see what the next century holds.
Pete Shadbolt, cofounder and chief scientific officer of PsiQuantum at #EmTechMIT on why traditional #computing will eventually reach a ceiling: “Machine learning has been very successful in learning from #data and making good approximations in areas where we have large volumes of data. However, there are problems that we would like to solve from first principles or in areas where we don’t have good access to data. So drug design, #materials design, partial differential equation solving… these are the types of problems that we resort to #supercomputers for. Many of those problems have the property that they scale exponentially badly as you increase the size of the molecule or the size of the area of material that you’re trying to simulate. And so for some of those problems, we don’t know of any classical algorithm that would solve those problems in any kind of acceptable time, even with a conventional #computer the size of Manhattan. So there are a set of problems that we don’t expect to ever solve with conventional supercomputers. And that’s why people are going to these great lengths and why there is so much excitement about #quantum computing.”

We had the pleasure of hosting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves at PsiQuantum’s research and development facility at Sci-Tech Daresbury in the North West of the UK. Co-founder & CEO Prof. Jeremy O'Brien O’Brien and Chief Technologist Mark Thompson led the tour, where the Prime Minister and Chancellor saw PsiCube, our prototype cryogenic quantum computing module, which played a pivotal role in our recent results in silicon photonic chip technology. (Read more here: https://bit.ly/uk-pm) Our Daresbury facility, which opened in March 2023, is critical to PsiQuantum’s efforts to build the first utility-scale quantum computer. The team, led by Prof. Mark Thompson, is advancing and testing systems that are foundational for large-scale quantum computing. We’re proud of the UK’s leadership in quantum research and support for companies like PsiQuantum. Prof. O’Brien said, “Quantum computing is set to transform many of the economy’s critical industries, but we need large-scale systems to unlock that promise. The UK has been a leader in quantum computing for decades, and its focus on investment, research, and workforce development that has enabled companies like PsiQuantum to anchor key R&D efforts here.”

As PsiQuantum’s operations and partnerships continue to grow in Queensland, we are excited to announce a new ‘Test & Characterization’ Lab in Brisbane at Griffith University’s Nathan campus. The lab, operated exclusively by PsiQuantum, will handle both cryogenic and room-temperature photonic quantum computing subsystems, ensuring high-performance integration and will open in early 2025. Griffith University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Carolyn Evans, said: “We are excited about the partnership with PsiQuantum and the opportunities it will bring for more Queensland students to build future-focused STEM careers, while building on more than 20 years of leading research in quantum technology here at Griffith and across the state.” “We’re thrilled to partner with Griffith University to develop this new lab at Nathan Campus that will see a specialized team play a major role in the development of our first utility-scale systems.” said PsiQuantum Senior Director of Technical Partnerships, Professor Geoff Pryde, who is on leave from Griffith University As PsiQuantum scales from operating a small number of systems to implementing a large, modular machine, the ability to bring many subsystems to high-performance operation quickly and efficiently will become crucial. This lab will develop advanced processes to enable such operations. Its activities are expected to expand and eventually merge with the larger quantum computing facility in Brisbane. https://lnkd.in/gmSty7RD
