Are you an "Aspiring Psychologist"? Hold your compass properly, or you will be lost. Recently, I was recruiting for organisational psychologists on LinkedIn, and the experience was nothing short of eye-opening. 65% of the applicants were clinical psychologists 30% were counselling or general psychologists Only a mere 5% had a background in organisational psychology—the very specialisation we were seeking. We explicitly asked for relevant experience in the application, yet the responses were, unfortunately, wide of the mark: "I am experienced in clinical psychology" "I managed people in a rehabilitation centre." "I worked for one year in a hospital." "I interned at the Spastic Society." "I learned CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)." While these experiences are undoubtedly valuable in their respective fields, they don't align with the competencies required for an organisational psychologist. It's like applying for a software engineering role because you know how to operate a smartphone even though technology applies on both sides. It saddens me to see students navigating psychology without direction. It begs the question: Are you choosing your psychology domain with an understanding of future possibilities, personal fit, and available opportunities? Here's a thought: There's little point in pursuing internships, certifications, or qualifications that don't align with a clear career goal. Lesson for All Psychology Students: Understand Your Domain Know the differences between subdomains such as clinical, counselling, general, and organisational psychology. Many Career opportunities are available in categories other than the allied- healthcare sector, as well Psychology has more than 40+ active domains. Align Your Experience: Seek opportunities that match your desired career path. Plan Strategically: Don't collect experiences aimlessly; make each one count toward your future goals. Don't let your journey in psychology be a series of misaligned steps. Choose your path wisely, and invest your time where it truly matters. Carry your career compass before you start the journey and during the journey as well. Still, do you need clarity? Ask people from the relevant domains and understand the work nature and requirements. Wish you all a great professional future with prosperity and share your point of view.
