I recently had the amazing opportunity to give a Keynote for Public Media for All Day of Action and Education about the future of DEI in Public Media. While I have so many thoughts I was excited to speak to both the great work we have done PRX and reflect on some research about the future. I started with the critical role DEI plays in shaping not just organizational culture, but the retention and well-being of those leading this work. Inspired by HBR’s study, Why DEI Leaders Are Burning Out — and How Organizations Can Help. I shared 3 big takeaways. 1️⃣ Prioritize Self-Care for DEI Practitioners: DEI work often requires emotional labor—holding space for change while navigating inequity. 2️⃣ Integrate Research Across Disciplines: DEI work benefits from interdisciplinary frameworks, such as/ but not limited to adult learning theories and change management models like ADKAR. 3️⃣ Drive Systemic Change: Real progress happens when DEI efforts are institutionalized: -Partner with HR to align policies and processes with equity goals. -Evaluate the employee lifecycle—from recruitment to retirement—to ensure it reflects organizational values. -Tie measurable DEI outcomes to business goals, strengthening public media’s mission to serve diverse communities authentically.
