NYC’s public transit is the city’s heartbeat: over 600 miles of subway tracks and 300+ bus routes keep millions moving daily. 🚇🚌 With only 50% of households owning a car, public transit is a lifeline for many communities. But public transit is not just about transportation: it’s about equity and sustainability. It is the engine behind NYC’s vibrancy, but it only works if it serves all community members and can withstand the strain brought on by climate change. Want to learn more about the resilience of the NYC Public Transit system? Give Project Coordinator Veronica Maisch's blog post a read! 🌆 Have ideas for how to make public transit more resilient in New York? Don’t hesitate to comment on the blog post or share your thoughts in the comments section below! #PublicTransit #NYC https://lnkd.in/gaivQ3U8

In honor of this quarter's theme of resilience, Public Works Partners Analyst Ilan Ackelsberg did a deep dive on Restorative Justice (RJ) to explore opportunities for resilience in the criminal justice system. RJ is an approach to justice that focuses on repair instead of punishment. Since the murder of George Floyd over four years ago, RJ has become an increasingly popular tool to address past harms inflicted by the traditional justice system. But recent criticism of the movement from both sides of the aisle has called its future into question. How can we overcome these obstacles and build a more “just” version of restorative justice? What are RJ’s opportunities and limits and how can we maximize its positive impact on communities? Click the link below to check out Ilan’s article and learn all about RJ and its future! https://lnkd.in/gKnqr6Hh

I spent part of this Election Day touring Hart Island, NYC’s public cemetery, or “potter’s field.” Hundreds of thousands have been buried here since 1858, including Union soldiers, victims of AIDS whose families would not claim their bodies, and COVID-19 victims. Burials tripled in 2020. An object lesson in why we need city services and to care for each other. NYC is far from perfect but we are working to improve. And some of these wonderful people are part of that - Mark Foggin Scott Zucker Mark S. In 1845, the United States Congress passed a law designating the first Tuesday in November as Election Day, and here we are, 179 years later, heading to the polls once again to shape our country's future. Voting is a right we’re grateful to have, and at Public Works Partners, we’re all about making sure everyone has a voice. If you haven’t yet, we encourage you to get out there and vote—it’s one of the biggest ways to make a difference! Need help finding your polling place?
