This fall I had the incredible opportunity to travel to the Manang District of Nepal as a 2024 Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellow to document the effects of climate change on the mountaineering industry. I was fortunate enough to spend time reporting along the Annapurna Circuit Trail, filming with an all-female mountaineering guide training camp in Pokhara, and speaking with countless guides, climbers, farmers, and families whose livelihoods in the Himalayas are so intertwined with the often unpredictable climate. Thank you so much to Boston University College of Communication for speaking with me about my experience in Nepal and covering the story of my reporting trip in their recent publication. In the three years since the start of the Russian invasion, Ukrainian teens have divided their time between school and preparing themselves to protect their country. Many train in local gymnasiums to join the military, others spend their afternoons building drones that will be loaded with explosives and used as weapons. “I don’t have time to go to school,” says Dasha, 16, who volunteers at an organization that trains civilians in the basics of trauma medicine. “Of course, if we want to have a good childhood, we can flee to Poland, but it means losing this country,” says 17-year-old Oleks. In a report for Rolling Stone, Pulitzer Center grantee Natalie Keyssar explored the daily life of teenagers in Kyiv, Ukraine. The Pulitzer Center, in partnership with iMEdD - incubator for Media Education and Development, is seeking applications from journalists based in Southeastern Europe to attend a two-day, in-person training program on AI accountability reporting led by award-winning journalists Karen Hao and Gabriel Geiger. The hands-on training, part of the Pulitzer Center’s AI Spotlight Series, and facilitated by iMEdD’s training pillar, Ideas Zone, provides an opportunity for journalists to learn how to effectively cover the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and their impact in our daily lives, follow AI supply chains, and document harms. There are more than 7,000 edible halophytes in the world. Ancient texts show that people have foraged them for food, medicine and fuel for thousands of years. As sea level rise makes coastal farmland (and marginal but farmable land) saltier, there are alternatives to planting conventional crops which mostly can't survive high saline levels. I traveled to see what's working, and where, for Scientific American with generous support from the Pulitzer Center’s Ocean Reporting Network as part of my ongoing project on soil salinity and food security.
