Why? 🚨 Endless emails—most irrelevant, but I have to stay on top of them. 📅 Back-to-back meetings—barely any time for deep work. 🔥 Fixing other people’s mistakes—even when the plan was clear. 😤 Happy stakeholders = me picking up slack. 🙄 Bad attitudes from grown adults who don’t like being asked to do their jobs. 🌍 Late nights, early mornings—thanks to different time zones. ⚖️ Constant shifting priorities—nothing feels stable. 🔄 Layoffs, terminations, and new hires—the cycle never ends.   • 𝑪𝒓𝒂𝒑, 𝑰’𝒎 𝒂 𝑴𝒊𝒔-𝑯𝒊𝒓𝒆. It’s been ten months, and I’ve realized this role isn’t the right fit. On paper, everything lined up—15 years of experience, certifications, an MBA—but in reality, they need a technical expert, not a business strategist. Instead of driving impact, I’ve become a middleman. My 1:1s with my manager are tense because I have no tangible accomplishments to report. I’ve tried shifting focus, volunteering for relevant projects, and even bringing in homemade cake to ease the awkwardness. Still, nothing’s working. And with a short tenure + a tough job market, my escape options are limited. Now, my review is coming up. • Do I acknowledge the elephant in the room? • Offer to resign in exchange for severance? • Wait for them to let me go and take whatever terms they offer?   • 𝑰 𝑮𝒐𝒕 𝒂 𝑱𝒐𝒃 𝑶𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓, 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝑷𝒂𝒚 𝑶𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝑰𝒏 𝑬𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒚. I was offered a job at a US-registered startup with European founders. Their product seems legit (I even took a test on it), and they’re launching soon. Here’s the catch: • Salary = Equity based on the formula: Equity % = Today’s Valuation / My Salary • They’ll pay in cash only if they generate revenue after launch. As someone living in a third-world country, I have a lot of questions: 1. Isn’t equity worthless unless the company generates cash or there’s a buy/sell market for shares? 2. How am I legally protected in this situation, especially since I’m not based in the US or Europe? I considered doing this as a part-time role while keeping my main job for income. But based on what I’ve researched and read here, it seems too risky.   • 𝑯𝑹 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝑴𝒆 𝑶𝒇 𝑯𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒘𝒐 𝑱𝒐𝒃𝒔, 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝑰 𝑶𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝑯𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝑶𝒏𝒆. Last week, HR pulled me into a meeting and claimed they had “reason to believe” I’m working a second job—which I’m not. They said it was based on “unusual keyboard and mouse activity.” They handed me a form to sign, confirming I have no other employment. I told them the truth—I don’t have a second job. I asked why they think this, and they wouldn’t give me any specific evidence. Then, during my performance review, they offered me a raise but said they wouldn’t process it until I signed that same form. I’ve never been asked to sign anything like this for a raise before. It feels like they’re pressuring me to admit to something I didn’t do.   • 𝑫𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈. In reflecting on this sub and my experiences, I’ve noticed two distinct approaches: 1. The Manager • Focus: Getting work done, hard stop. • Mindset: Work is work; emotions, individuality, or life outside of work are irrelevant. • View: People are employees who exist to complete tasks. 2. The Leader • Focus: Guiding and inspiring people to do their best work. • Mindset: Work is a part of life, not life itself. • View: People are unique individuals, capable of greatness when supported, motivated, and empowered. • Belief: Transformational change happens when you balance work with empathy and acknowledge complexities. It’s a spectrum, not a black-and-white dichotomy, and we all fall somewhere on it. Your approach depends on what you value and prioritize. This week, one of those employers called my boss to verify that I applied for a role. Cue an awkward meeting: my boss called me into his office to talk about it. Not cool.
