Last week I had the privilege of speaking at the White House in a roundtable to discuss "Aging and Loneliness in the LGBTQI+ Community" hosted by Stephen K. Benjamin, Senior Advisor to the President and Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and Kenneth Sandoval-Bushur, Senior Advisor of the White House Office of Public Engagement. I was joined by other LGBTQIA+ leaders including my friend and collegue Michael Edmonson, CEO of Worthy Mentoring. A few key takeaways: 🔶 LGBTQIA+ elders are often feeling isolated, have limited places to go and lack a deep sense of community. 🔶 There are few assisted living centers where LGBTQIA+ elders feel safe being out and often go back "into the closet" in these environments. 🔶 While the AIDS epidemic in the 80s and 90s disproportionately impacted the LGBTQIA+ community and some say "entire generation was lost" there is a diverse and thriving aging LGBTQIA+ community in the US. 🔶 Intergenerational mentorship is as critical for LGBTQIA+ youth as it is for LGBTQIA+ adults. Everyone needs a strong sense of community. 🔶 Collaborating with other LGBTQIA+ leaders working within our community creates greater opportunities for partnership and collaboration.
