CEO | Host of the Passion Struck Podcast | International Keynote Speaker | Award-Winning Author | Navy Veteran

I’m thrilled to announce that Episode #542 of the Passion Struck Podcast is now live! This week, I had the privilege of speaking with Kim Scott, the visionary author of Radical Candor® and her latest groundbreaking book, Radical Respect. Kim’s work has redefined leadership, showing us how to foster feedback-rich environments, build resilient teams, and create cultures where everyone thrives. 🎙 Here are three transformative takeaways from our conversation: 1️⃣ Radical Candor in Action Kim introduced us to the concept of Radical Candor: balancing personal care with direct challenges. She broke down how avoiding common pitfalls—like ruinous empathy or obnoxious aggression—can lead to honest, growth-oriented feedback that strengthens teams and relationships. 2️⃣ Tackling Bias, Prejudice, and Bullying One of the most powerful parts of our discussion was Kim’s framework for identifying and addressing workplace challenges like unconscious bias, intentional prejudice, and bullying. Her practical strategies for tackling these issues head-on are a must-hear for any leader looking to build a respectful and inclusive workplace. 3️⃣ The Courage to Be an Upstander Kim inspired us to step up as upstanders when witnessing bias or disrespect. From calling out behaviors with “I” statements to supporting colleagues after an incident, her insights reinforce that creating a respectful workplace is a collective effort. This episode is packed with actionable insights that can elevate your leadership and help you cultivate the environments where your teams can thrive. 🎧 https://lnkd.in/eK3HAEbx Listen now on Spotify, YouTube, or your favorite podcast platform. 📩 For more inspiration, sign up for my Live Intentionally newsletter at passionstruck.com. Dick Costolo spent a lot of time and effort thinking about how to make Twitter a more inclusive, open environment. When he took the Implicit Association Test (IAT) that measures unconscious bias, his scores revealed him to have essentially no unconscious bias. Per the IAT, he’s less gender-biased than I am, and I consider myself a real champion for women. One of my favorite stories about Dick and diversity was his effort to eliminate the phrase “you guys” from his vocabulary. I told him a story about my twins—one a boy and one a girl—who were in kindergarten. Both of their teachers were speculating why boys raise their hands more often than girls. Then I attended a class and heard the teacher ask: “OK, you guys, who knows what four plus one is?” No wonder the girls weren’t raising their hands! Children are literal, and girls are not guys. I told Dick that story and confessed that I’m literal too and feel annoyed whenever somebody addresses a mixed group as “guys” or “you guys.” Most people look at me sideways when I launch into my “you guys” diatribe, but Dick smacked his forehead. “Of course! There’s nothing worse than being invisible. I can’t believe I never thought of that! There’s no worse way to make a group of people feel excluded than to use language that pretends they are simply not in the room.” “Yes, like Invisible Man,” I said. Dick and I had recently discussed Ralph Ellison’s novel about an African-American man whose color renders him invisible. “Yes, exactly! OK, you’ve convinced me. I’m going to start saying ‘you all’!” Dick said. Changing a reflexive idiom is hard work, but Dick put real energy into training himself to shift his language. This small but meaningful change is a powerful example of how much language matters. It’s about more than words - it’s about recognizing who’s in the room and ensuring no one feels invisible. What steps have you taken to make your language more inclusive? Let’s keep these conversations going.

  • When sexual assault happens despite your efforts to prevent it, how can leaders ensure that they respond with institutional courage? Check out this week's #RadicalRespect newsletter for some things you can do.

You’d think that we have a shared understanding that sexual assault is both illegal and immoral. I thought so too until I worked at a company where a woman was raped and I overheard several of the young men say, “She was so drunk, what did she expect?” They appeared not to know that having sex with an unconscious woman was rape. When I told them and had a lawyer reiterate the facts, they realized they’d better change their behavior. You may not think that educating your employees about consent is part of your job as a leader, but it is. #radicalrespect #consentmatters #SexualAssaultAwareness #WorkplaceSafety #LeadershipAccountability #EndRapeCulture #CompanyCulture #EmployeeWellbeing #believesurvivors

CRO at Radical Candor, LLC | Developing Leaders, Empowering Teams, and Transforming Workplace Culture with Radical Candor

In my opinion, most leadership training workshops have one of two problems: (1) They’re highly theoretical with esoteric scientific jargon that is rarely understood, not easily implemented, nor all that pragmatic. Consequently, the lessons in these workshops are easily forgotten, never implemented, and have little to no impact on the teams they’re intended to help. or (2) They use a lot of flashy sizzle to teach you how to lead your team like a Formula One pit crew or a team of Navy SEALs…which is rarely practical nor realistic for a manager to actually implement in a commercial setting. These types of workshops can be fun, but because the people teaching them typically don’t have a lot of practical leadership experience outside of their unique environments, they’re often not broadly applicable to other organizations. At Radical Candor®, we take a different approach. We have decades of experience managing teams in both commercial and non-commercial environments, so we don’t need to bother with a bunch of lingo or theatrics. We simply teach people the key lessons and techniques we developed and refined through years of practical application on the job - not scientific theory. And to make sure that what we teach resonates and is actionable, we take what worked for us and break it down into a clear, cogent, pragmatic, playbook. The result: Our trainings tend to alter the operational and cultural norms of organizations. We get consistently get strong feedback from our clients who tell us that they’re communicating far more effectively, leading more effectively, sorting through problems faster, and achieving greater results as an organization. We have worked with over 2,000 organizations from large commercial companies to small businesses, to doctors' offices and hospitals, the US Military, and everything in between. We’re proud of the fact that our NPS Score is +70 (Excellent) and our average rating across thousands of workshops and keynotes is 4.7 out of 5 stars. But we’re even prouder that our customers are getting what they need from our training: better culture, more engaged teams, and better results.
