  • A coronary calcium score is a quick, non-invasive CT scan that measures the calcium buildup in your coronary arteries. This buildup, known as plaque, can narrow arteries and increase your risk of a heart attack. A coronary calcium score may be recommended if you have a family history of heart disease, are over 40 and have risk factors like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or smoking, and have borderline risk but want more clarity. • ❤️ February is American Heart Month—a time to prioritize your heart health! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming nearly 700,000 lives annually. That’s 1 in every 5 deaths. Here’s what you can do to protect your heart: 🩺 Get Regular Check-ups: Many heart conditions can be silent—early detection saves lives. 🥗 Eat Heart-Healthy Foods: Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and veggies. Cut back on sodium and added sugars. 🚶♂️ Stay Active: Just 30 minutes of moderate activity, 5 days a week can lower your risk of heart disease. 💤 Prioritize Sleep: Poor sleep is linked to high blood pressure and heart disease. Aim for 7-9 hours per night. 👉 Know the signs of a heart attack: chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea. Fast action can save a life!

  • A thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy is a procedure that removes a small sample of tissue from your thyroid gland. The process of gathering a biopsy is simple and quick. The physician will likely use a local anesthetic to numb the area before inserting the needle into the thyroid for a sample. You might be sore for a day or two afterward, but this can be mitigated by OTC pain medication. Learn about fine needle aspiration at RIS: https://lnkd.in/gM-mFGwK

  • Changes in memory or thinking can be worrisome, and a PET scan can help provide answers. At RIS Imaging, our PET scans help detect amyloid plaque buildup, an early sign of Alzheimer's disease. By identifying these buildups in the brain, we can support the healthcare provider in making an accurate diagnosis and developing a treatment plan best suited for your loved one. We offer brain imaging services at our Kissimmee and Lakeland, Florida imaging centers. Please call (863) 688-2334 to schedule a brain scan.

  • According to the American Thyroid Association, 1 in 10 people suffer from a thyroid disorder. This month highlights the importance of thyroid health. A self-exam is a great starting point for checking your thyroid. Take a drink of water and tilt your neck back. When swallowing, take note of any lumps or bulges that appear above the collarbone and below your voice box. If you notice any lumps or bulges, schedule a consult with your physician. If you need a thyroid biopsy, you don't have to go to a hospital. At Radiology Imaging Specialists, we offer a minimally invasive biopsy in a comfortable outpatient setting. • A screening mammogram is a routine test recommended for women without any symptoms. It's a proactive measure to detect breast cancer early, even before you feel or see anything unusual. On the other hand, a diagnostic mammogram is more targeted. It's used when there’s a lump, pain, or other symptoms, or if an abnormality was found in a screening mammogram. This test provides a closer, more detailed look to help diagnose what's going on. Both are essential tools in the fight against breast cancer, each serving a unique purpose in keeping you healthy.
