“We’re thinking about investing for the first time. Is now a good time or should we wait until the election cycle settles down?” We got this question from a nonprofit before a recent webinar, and I thought it was a great one. The short answer is there’s an opportunity cost to waiting. If your nonprofit has built up large cash reserves that you’re not likely to spend for the next 3, 5, 10 years or more, leaving those dollars uninvested means you’re losing purchasing power to inflation. Missing even a few days of being invested can make a large difference in performance over long time periods. Remember: investing doesn’t just mean stocks. Think more broadly about your asset allocation and what’s appropriate for your cash flow and goals. Securities like CDs, Treasuries, and Money Market Funds have yields in the 5% range right now. Any funds you may need in the short-term should be invested more conservatively. Anything you may not need to spend for longer time periods can be invested in a more growth-oriented manner with a balanced mix of stocks and bonds. If you’re still second guessing your timing with the election coming up, start building your investment policy now. It’s never a bad time to do that, and you’ll need it when you invest for the first time – whether that’s before November or after.
