Missile Warning Systems (MWS) are critical for detecting and countering incoming threats, such as missiles, in military and civilian applications. Among the most widely used technologies are ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) sensors, each offering unique advantages and limitations. UV MWS excels in low false alarm rates by operating in a spectrum with minimal background noise, while IR MWS achieves longer detection ranges due to the strong thermal emissions from missile plumes. However, IR systems are more prone to false alarms caused by environmental heat sources. Understanding the differences between these systems is essential for selecting the right technology for specific operational scenarios. Here I am including a simple practical study to illustrate the difference in theory, operation and performance between the two types.

I just returned from the 2024 Association of Old Crows event in National Harbor, and I must say it was one hell of a time! I really appreciate all the conversations and connections I made there! It was busy for everyone, but somehow, it all came together, and it felt like a place where the best minds in EW/ISR could really come together and share ideas, collaborate, and spend quality time together. Before the main event, I spent the day at CRFS’s first-ever vendor conference. They also had Silvus Technologies, Peraton Labs, and Parry Labs present their capabilities and thoughts, which were all quite impressive. Their presentations were on point, and they truly understand the EMS domain and their place in it. Meeting all of the teams in person was great since we often talked online beforehand. CRFS is the real deal, and if anyone reading this can attend their event next year, you should do it. I wanted to specifically thank Zachary George from CRFS's team as he and I are huge advocates of EW and are trying our damndest to spread the word of its importance and needs. People like you are essential in informing and communicating the warfighter's needs and the EMS's power on the battlefield and beyond. I also spent time with DataShapes AI and STG Advanced. The hardware from STG Advanced paired with Datashapes AI immediately attracted my attention. It is a combo you do not forget once you see it in action. On top of that, I checked out PROCITEC GmbH and met its leadership teams. They continue to impress me, and I learned they have a family of sister companies that make for a complete package all under one roof. It felt like stepping into a seriously comprehensive RF solution that covers all the bases. I also want to thank Andrea Hanke ☑️ for inviting me and my team to their after-party, which was their 25th anniversary. It was a super fun time, and I look forward to next year! I was very fortunate to spend some time with Anthony (Tony) Lisuzzo (SES Retired), the new AOC president, and I could not be more excited about hearing his vision for the AOC. He means business, and I believe the AOC will thrive under his leadership. I also had a chance to talk with Michael A. Powell about what he is doing with his Mile High Country Crows of the Association of Old Crows chapter. The Colorado chapters also have a fantastic vision for the Space EW domain, which I'm a big advocate for, and they are actively turning it into reality. I did not manage to snap any photos since I was so caught up in the moment. If I missed connecting with you this time, please do not hesitate to let me know. Whether we are talking shop or just saying hello, I am always open to building new relationships. It was a great experience, and I cannot wait to see what comes next year. • From November 19 to 21, 2024, the NATO Electronic Warfare Advisory Committee (NEWAC) gathered at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. As someone immersed in EW/ISR, I wish I could have been a fly on the wall during this event. It would have been fascinating to hear the discussions and see the strategies NATO is developing to maintain its edge in the electromagnetic domain. The Importance of Electronic Warfare EW is no longer optional. It is a necessity in modern operations. The War in Ukraine has proven how essential it is to disrupt radar systems, jam communications, interfere with navigation, and gather intelligence. These capabilities are at the core of multidomain operations. NATO’s focus on staying ahead in this space is critical for ensuring the security and strength of the Alliance. What Happened at the Meeting The meeting, led by Colonel Fatih Akgul, addressed several key challenges. One major topic was the creation of a stronger framework for sharing information among member nations. This kind of collaboration ensures that NATO can respond quickly and effectively to emerging threats. Lessons learned from national and multinational exercises were also shared, helping refine strategies based on real-world experience. A major focus was on achieving electromagnetic superiority. The discussions emphasized that NATO must counter adversarial capabilities and advance its own to maintain a decisive advantage in the electromagnetic spectrum. Looking Ahead Future meetings are planned for the United States and Turkey. These will provide further opportunities to refine strategies and strengthen NATO’s approach to EW. I will follow these developments closely to stay informed about the progress. As someone who lives and breathes EW/ISR, I believe this meeting is a powerful reminder of how important it is to stay engaged with developments in the field. The challenges ahead require collaboration, innovation, and a strong commitment to readiness. NATO’s work inspires confidence and demonstrates the importance of being prepared in an increasingly complex operational environment. https://lnkd.in/gE7GFdQQ #EW #Electronicwarfare #EMSO #ISR #SIGINT #ELINT #COMINT #EA

Next week, the biggest gathering of Electronic Warfare experts in the world will occur in National Harbor, MD, at the 61st Annual AOC International Symposium and Convention. This year’s theme is 'Electromagnetic Spectrum Warfare: The Great Power Competition'; it feels more relevant than ever. The world is becoming more complex and challenging every day, from the wars in Ukraine and Gaza to conflicts in the Red Sea and rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific. Whether it is monitoring borders for troop buildups during peacetime or denying critical data and information to adversaries through electronic attacks in high-intensity conflict, success in the electromagnetic spectrum will play a central role in winning this great power competition. This year’s convention is taking a deep dive into the lessons learned so far and what they mean for maneuvering in the EMS battlespace across all domains and theaters of operation. It will also explore what it will take to achieve EMS superiority on a global scale. I am excited to attend and would love to connect with you while I’m there. You can find me at the Ampex Data Systems Booth #338, so please stop by to chat about capabilities and network or say hi. I’ll also be arriving a day early for the all-day CRFS event, so let me know if you’ll be there, too. This is always one of my favorite shows, bringing together some of the field's brightest minds and most innovative ideas. If you cannot make it this time, feel free to reach out, and we can set up an online call to connect. I am looking forward to seeing all of you soon! “In God We Trust, All Others We Monitor, Jam, or Deceive” -Crows https://lnkd.in/gu5denWB #EW #ElectronicWarfare #ISR #SIGINT #ELINT #COMINT #EA #ES #EMSO

During my time in Special Operations, I exclusively worked with tactical radio systems in some of the most intense and high-stakes combat environments. One thing I often found myself wishing for back then was the ability to "see" and identify threats or signals around our strike force—on both infil and exfil from target. Outside of actions on the objective, these were some of the most vulnerable and high-risk phases of any mission, where even the smallest undetected threat could have jeopardized the entire operation. Given what we see today, Electronic Warfare (EW) and Tactical Communications should be tied at the hip, with the Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) acting as the connective tissue. These two capabilities are intricately linked, with each influencing the other’s success or failure. With advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), it’s clear that the next step is to fully integrate these systems into tactical radios. In my opinion, combining DataShapes AI with EW and comms can provide real-time, adaptive solutions that significantly enhance situational awareness and operational effectiveness from the edge. At a minimum - Imagine if our tactical radios could: - Autonomously learn the environment - Adapt in Real-Time - Detect and counter threats - Share that information across your formation This is where DataShapes AI comes in. We don’t just enhance communications—we transform them into a dynamic, adaptive system that learns and responds in real-time. By integrating DataShapes AI with your EW and tactical comms, we unlock the full potential of the Electromagnetic Spectrum, giving our teams an unmatched advantage in the field. We’re not just keeping up—we’re shaping the future. Looking ahead, the potential is limitless. DataShapes AI will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, reshaping the landscape of military and commercial operations alike. We are setting the bar for the next generation of integrated, high-tech #software solutions—one that will define how operations are carried out in an increasingly complex, contested electromagnetic environment. #AI #MachineLearning #TacticalCommunications #ElectronicWarfare #Innovation #CombatTech #MilitaryTechnology #SignalIntelligence #FutureTech #signalcorps
