This week, I had the privilege to reflect on my journey during the recently held Presidential Townhall and to consider the immense potential the AfCFTA holds for youth-led enterprises and African trade at large. At Real Sources Official Africa, we’ve not only benefited from the AfCFTA framework but are also actively championing inter-African trade through the TradeConnect Initiative. This groundbreaking initiative aims to ship 1,000 containers over the next 12 months to various African countries, highlighting the strength of Kenyan products on a continental stage—a vision made possible through the unwavering support of our partners African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, @Ministry of Trade and Industry @Ministry of Co-operatives and SME Development, Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency, TradeMark Africa UBA Kenya, Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, The Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA),NFT Autoports, DHL, Scan Global Logistics During the session, I emphasized two critical areas that require focused investment to unlock the full potential of intra-African trade and boost Kenya's trade: 1. Market Development: Many African nations remain unaware of the diverse and high-quality products their neighbors manufacture. Addressing this knowledge gap through sustained market development campaigns will be pivotal for boosting intra-African trade. 2. Innovative Trade Finance Solutions By enabling manufacturers to use their products as collateral and leveraging credit guarantee schemes, we can secure payments and drive growth for small and medium enterprises across the continent. I also highlighted the transformative role of empowering youth and women in trade, a cornerstone of the AfCFTA’s protocols. Their participation is not just a moral imperative but a strategic advantage for driving inclusive economic growth. The vision behind the TradeConnect Initiative is clear: to foster meaningful trade connections, empower local businesses, and create sustainable pathways for economic prosperity across Africa. We welcome partnerships that will enable the Tradeconnect Initiative to achieve its mandate. I extend my deepest gratitude to the Office of the President for organizing such impactful forums, which provide a platform to engage on progressive national matters. The 5th Edition of the All Africa IP Summit-Africa was an extraordinary platform for catalyzing discussions around leveraging intellectual property (IP) as a cornerstone of Africa’s economic transformation. This year’s theme, “Intellectual Property Rights: The Catalyst for Sustainable Development Goals in Africa,” resonated profoundly with our mission at Real Sources Africa (RSA)—to champion regional trade integration and innovation-driven growth across the continent. Over the course of the summit, we were inspired by the robust exchange of ideas, particularly on how partnerships can unlock the full potential of the AfCFTA IP Protocol. Practical examples of collaboration, such as certifying GIs for African products like Ethiopian coffee and deploying innovative authenticity tools like blockchain, underscored the role of IP in driving both competitiveness and cultural preservation. These discussions reinforced the critical importance of aligning IP frameworks with Africa's unique economic and cultural aspirations. At RSA, our flagship program, TradeConnect Initiative, has already laid the groundwork for operationalizing these concepts. By fostering partnerships, our resolve is to advocate for IP education, streamlined registration processes, and use our platform as a marketplace for African creators to commercialize their innovations. This summit has further solidified our commitment to scale these efforts, ensuring IP rights empower businesses, protect African heritage, and drive sustainable trade growth. Our deepest gratitude to the International Trade and Research Centre (ITRC) for hosting such an impactful event. To an Africa where intellectual property rights not only protect but also propel our collective prosperity. African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat Sand K. Mba Felix Chege
