  • Blue spaces provide a dynamic and ever-changing environment for children to explore nature and STEM concepts. Have you considered integrating these rich environments into our educational programs? Are you lucky enough to have a blue space nearby? It's valuable to reflect on how we can maximize their potential for children's STEM learning and discovery... Consider: 🌊 How might your current approach to STEM learning transform if you had regular access to a coastal environment, and what unique opportunities for exploring STEM concepts could you identify in this "blue space"? 🌊 In what ways could the dynamic nature of coastal environments (tides, waves, changing weather) enhance children's understanding of STEM concepts compared to more static learning environments? 🌊 How could you thoughtfully scaffold children's scientific inquiries at the beach while maintaining the balance between intentional teaching and child-led discovery through play?

  • I'm enjoying collaborating with Lili-Ann Kriegler on developing a new professional learning experience - - Project Sustainability. 🌏 It's for Early Childhood Education and Care services ready to explore sustainability more deeply and holistically through place and project-based learning. Beyond the 3 Rs: Reimagining Sustainability in Early Learning What if sustainability in early learning went beyond worm farms and recycling bins? True Education for Sustainability nurtures children who: • Think critically about their world 🌏 • Connect deeply with their community 🤝 • Take meaningful action for positive change 🦸♀️ • Develop essential skills for the future 👩🔬👨🎓 Yet many educators feel uncertain about how to create these deeper learning experiences. This is why I have joined forces with Lili-Ann Kriegler to create Project Sustainability - a range of empowering learning experiences for educators to design transformative sustainability projects that engage children, families, and communities - and embed sustainability in your program and practice. It's Children's Week! 👏 The Children’s Week National Theme for 2024 aligns closely with sustainability and is based on UNCRC Article 24: Children have the right to good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that they will stay healthy. Richer countries should help poorer countries achieve this. 🌏💧🌳🌱🍎 It's a great opportunity to start a conversation with your team about the ethical responsibility we have as educators to provide opportunities for children to explore and experience sustainability and sustainable environments and how a sustainable environment impacts our health and wellbeing.

It's Children's Week! ✨ This year’s theme focuses on Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is Children have the right to a clean and safe environment. This highlights the importance of children having access to good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment. #ChildrensWeek #RightsoftheChild

  • Are you interested in how a strengths based approach to sustainability can help you engage your team, children, families and community in your quest to embed sustainability in your setting? This was the topic of my ECA Conference Presentation last week. Is this something you'd like to know more about?

Attending the Early Childhood Australia Conference in Brisbane last week was an exciting opportunity to see where the leaders in the sector are at in terms of embedding sustainability. There were some great case studies and examples of ECEC services doing great things, but there's so much untapped potential for change making. Many attendees still searching for inspiration and insights - especially as the definition of sustainability has broadened and the sustainability principle has been added to the EYLF 2.0. Many educators are struggling to make connections between their current practice and the environmental, social and economic domains of sustainability. ECEC services really do have a unique opportunity to actually make a difference for sustainability. To develop children's competencies and shape how they think and feel about sustainability, the world and their place in it. My workshop presentation centred around tapping into your strengths, and those of your team, children, families and community and discovering how you might use them FOR sustainability. When we engage people in sustainability by encouraging them to bring their skills, passions and interests to the table, engagement soars and impact is amplified! If you want to chat about how a strengths based approach to embedding sustainability could solve your problem of engaging others in your quest for embedding sustainability in your early childhood setting, reach out and lets talk.
