We're happy to release our first research report: The Origins of Bitcoin MEV and Its Antecedents from Ethereum. On Bitcoin, we're seeing conditions setting the stage for MEV strategies similar to those found on Ethereum. This report draws parallels between the origins of MEV on Ethereum and a similar narrative now unfolding on Bitcoin. There are three parts to this report: • The history and mechanics of MEV on Ethereum • Recent developments on Bitcoin setting the stage for MEV • Observations and predictions on the manifestation of Bitcoin MEV A few of the (many!) key insights we discuss: • Token standards, metaprotocols, and nascent programmability on Bitcoin and how these developments are creating conditions for MEV to take place • MEV examples including transaction sniping and arbitrage, as well as predictions regarding more complex strategies like sandwich attacks • The impact on users, miners, and the overall Bitcoin ecosystem As MEV becomes prominent on Bitcoin, we believe it's vital for its users and builders to become MEV-aware. Programmability is coming to Bitcoin. With this new on-chain activity comes the potential for MEV (Maximum Extractable Value): potential profits (or value extraction) received by strategically ordering, including, or excluding transactions within a block. A widely acknowledged and developed phenomenon on Ethereum, MEV is now occurring on Bitcoin as well. Rebar Labs is building products and infrastructure to account for MEV on Bitcoin.
