[RESEARCH PAPER] 💡 Did you know that up to 43,000 lives could be saved annually in European cities if the WHO guidelines for nature access were met? Easier access to nature can help in improving people's physical and mental health: cognitive functioning, emotional well-being, and other dimensions of mental health are impacted by nature. 🌳 But how are physical and mental health improved and can we measure nature connectedness? Studies can differ greatly on the construct of this concept and therefore it is harder for a scientific consensus to exist on scales to use to measure it. 📖 This paper, to which GoGreen Routes Coordinator Tadhg MacIntyre participated, presents a systematic review assessing the methodological quality of manuscripts focusing on scales that explicitly measure nature connectedness. The research team, after developing a definition of nature connectedness, then came up with recommendations. 🔗 Access the study with the link the comments! About us
Walking in a park, swimming in a lake, cultivating flowers... What if these activities, practiced in a group and shared with others, were offered to fight loneliness and to improve wellbeing in cities? RECETAS (Re-imagining Environments for Connection and Engagement: Testing Actions for Social Prescribing in Natural Spaces) is a project funded by the European Commission's H2020 program. Our goal: develop and test green and social activities to improve the physical and mental health and well-being of urban citizens. Our consortium, composed of 13 institutions from 9 countries, is using multidisciplinary approaches to imagine and implement 'Nature-based Social Prescribing' in 6 pilot cities worldwide.

The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has published a new book: “Loneliness in Europe. Determinants, Risks and Interventions”. The book is open access, and can be found in the link below! Loneliness, often referred to as the ‘epidemic of the 21st century’, has emerged as a grave public health concern. For years, a lack of comprehensive European cross-national data hindered a thorough examination of this issue. In 2022, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre conducted the inaugural EU Loneliness Survey, covering around 30,000 individuals in 27 European nations. The book sheds light on who is most affected by loneliness, identifies contributing experiences and behaviours, addresses the stigmatisation of loneliness and discusses its societal impact. Furthermore, it emphasises the importance of interventions to combat loneliness. Finally, the book discusses the challenges of survey design and offers valuable insights for the monitoring of loneliness in Europe in the future. This makes the book a must-read for scholars and academics interested in population economics, public health and social well-being. Find the book here: https://lnkd.in/ghpqyRHY

[TAKING ACTION] 💡 Adressing loneliness in the European Union On 21 November 2024, RECETAS Coordinator Pr Jill Litt takes part of a Public Hearing organized as a follow-up to the European Parliament’s Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) pilot project on "Loneliness in the European Union". This 3-year pilot project has made significant strides, including the first-ever EU-wide survey interviewing 26,000 citizens, revealing that 50 million people feel lonely. The findings will be published in an upcoming book by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the DG Employment of the European Commission. Professor Jill Litt gets to share the insights from the RECETAS project and highlight our innovative Friends in Nature method, during the second panel of the hearing: "Policy interventions and good practices: What works to address loneliness?". 🧠 Loneliness is a gowing public health concern in the European Union, with many consequences (psychological, economic...). 13% of the EU-wide survey respondents experienced loneliness "most of the time". Over one-third felt lonely at least occasionally. Young adults, people experiencing impacting life events (job loss, separation), and people with fewer meaningful relationships are at higher risk. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened the issue, due to social distancing and restrictions, which specifically affected younger populations. However, loneliness does not impact one single demographic group; people of all ages are at risk, though geographic and socioeconomic status are important factors. ➡️ Going forward Policy discussions at the EU level stress the importance of integrating loneliness interventions across various sectors improving data collection to better understand its causes fostering community-oriented solutions. Efforts are also underway to develop systematic programs addressing loneliness, as existing interventions are often local and fragmented. 🌳 The RECETAS project Born from this context, RECETAS champions community-driven approaches to tackle loneliness, combining robust data, innovative methods, and collaborative solutions. EU Horizon 2020 project co-creating #naturebasedsolutions to foster physical health and mental wellbeing in Burgas, Lahti, Limerick, Tallinn, Umeå & Versailles.
We were delighted to get a sneak peek of outcomes from A Playful City ‘s #GoGreenRoutes Tour. Building on cocreation work and physical activity research from our project, A Playful City team put its own personal touch to get children and adults alike to expand their boundaries of play in shared urban space in our 6 cities. Going forward they are confident these workshops can be upscaled to other localities for community impact 🌳

🧠 EVENT: Highlighting the impact of socio-economic vulnerability on loneliness and isolation 🌲 The #RECETAS teams of Marseille (APHM (Assistance Publique - Hopitaux de Marseille) AVITEM) took part in the Departmental Congress on the battle against #Loneliness (Assises départementales de lutte contre l'isolement), organized on November 8, 2024, recalling a strong commitment of the Département des Bouches-du-Rhône and Jean-Marc PERRIN towards people in vulnerable situations, highlighting the deep link between precariousness and isolation. 💡 On the isolation of the elderly: Although all age groups are affected, the elderly are particularly hard hit by isolation, with consequences for their health and deteriorating autonomy. Socio-economic difficulties, such as reduced retirement incomes, often more pronounced among women, exacerbate this phenomenon. 🌱 RECETAS: an innovative approach to breaking isolation The #ProjetRECETAS attempts to provide answers to this problem, by targeting people far removed from support networks, offering them group activities in the great outdoors over several weeks. At the Assises, Lucie C. presented the main elements of the method and local activities in Marseille to encourage social ties and the well-being of isolated people, alongside Juliette HEMERY Keep up to date with RECETAS project news with our website link in the comments!
