Inspiring the conservation of natural resources through art and education at the San Francisco Transfer Station
About us
The Recology San Francisco Artist in Residence (AIR) Program is an art and education initiative that awards Bay Area artists access to discarded materials, an unrestricted stipend, and an individual studio space. These resources, along with comprehensive support, are provided to artists while they create a body of work and host studio visits during their four-month residency at the San Francisco Transfer Station. Since 1990, over 150 professional artists and 50 student artists from local colleges and universities have completed residencies. Selected artists have worked across disciplines—including new media, video, painting, photography, performance, sculpture, and installation—to explore a wide range of topics. The Recology AIR Program encourages the conservation of natural resources by providing artists with time, space, and reusable resources to create a new and impactful body of work. The Program further aims to create a more diverse and inclusive residency that amplifies perspectives from Bay Area communities and inspires children and adults who engage with the program to re-imagine their role in creating a just and sustainable world.

Recology San Francisco is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2025 Artist in Residence (AIR) Program. The six professional artists are Michael Hall, Laurel Roth Hope, Miguel Novelo, Helia Pouyanfar, Trina Michelle Robinson, and Josué Rojas; the four student artists are Haley Mae Caranto (California College of the Arts), Elizabeth Estrada (UC Berkeley), Eleanor Scholz (San Francisco State University), and Daniela Tinoco (San Francisco State University). Part of the Sustainability Education Program, the four-month AIR residency provides a rich and immersive environment for artists to develop their practice while deeply engaging with sustainability and community outreach. Artists are trained to access materials from the Public Reuse and Recycling Area, work in an on-site studio, and speak with tour groups, creating meaningful opportunities to raise awareness about the transformative potential of creative reuse. Please join us in welcoming our next cohort of artists!

Recology Ashland is excited to announce the artwork from its 2024 Artist in Residence program is now on display! Last year, Recology partnered with Southern Oregon University to raise public awareness of environmental needs such as source reduction of waste, recycling and resource conservation. The Ashland partnership is the 5th and latest residency program across the Recology enterprise and is the only one to exclusively feature student artists. This 2024 exhibition marks the second year this residency has taken place and incorporates discarded materials collected by students at Recology's Valley View Transfer Station. Until mid-August, the artists’ work will be featured at the temporary public sculpture garden near SOU’s Center for the Visual Arts and the CVA Galleries adjacent to the Schneider Museum of Art. The initiative is supported in part by Recology Ashland and the SOU Institute for Applied Sustainability Innovation Fund. Stay tuned – the 2025 cohort is already underway!

Our call for artists is now open for residencies in 2025! New this year, we will run our professional and student program applications concurrently, with both applications open June 1 - September 1, 2024. Please help us spread the word! Six professional artists and three higher education student artists will be awarded a four-month residency at the San Francisco Transfer Station. Unrestricted stipends ($1500/mo for professionals, $500/mo for students), access to discarded materials, a private studio space, and additional support will be provided. We encourage emerging, mid-career, and established artists working in all disciplines to apply. Artists' schedules are flexible and the program can accommodate those with full and part-time jobs, as long as artists in the professional program are in the studio 10-20 hours each week during standard work hours and are available to present to tour groups. Students are not required to be available for tours, but are asked to be onsite as much as possible during standard work hours. We do not accept applications from artists who reside more than a one-hour drive from the San Francisco Transfer Station. To apply, artists must attend an AIR Tour and apply through our slideroom application. The student application is free. Please note: If the $15 professional program application fee is a barrier to applying, email art@recology.com to request an exemption without impact to the application. For more information, please visit our Artist in Residence Program website. https://lnkd.in/ev3ysaCT https://lnkd.in/eQCds5hd https://lnkd.in/e5n96tAn
