Last month we shared about our expansion in 2007 to serve all grade levels in APS. As we began serving more students in schools, we also realized the need for office-based services. In 2013, the outpatient Barbara M. Vassel Comprehensive Care Center opened to serve children and adults in need of mental health care outside of the school setting.

This month's SEL tip comes from Red Oak staff member Joli Oliver, OCPSA. This time of year can be very exciting, and it can be helpful to take a moment to pause. Encourage mindfulness: Help children and teens be in the moment and aware of their bodies and minds through breathing exercises, sensory activities, or how to be aware of their surroundings. Be very quiet and still, and just pay attention to all of the sounds in the environment around you.

This month's mentoring tip comes from iC.A.R.E. Coordinator Eric Nevins, who shares about the importance of listening to your mentee: No matter your age, it's important to remember that the world is changing quickly, and young people may be experiencing the world quite differently from you. While you know a lot, and have a lot to share, remember to listen to your mentee and learn from their experience. Some of the most powerful mentoring experiences happen when the mentee teaches something to the mentor. If you would like to get involved in volunteering with iC.A.R.E. Mentoring, please visit icarementoring.org to learn more today!
