Even Steve Jobs said “Why would you hire smart people and then tell them what to do?” It’s so easy to think people will respect you more if you always have the “best” idea and talk the first and the loudest. But let me tell you, the more you can listen to others and then make informed decisions, the more your business will flourish and your employees and peers will respect you. You have one mouth and two ears.    Use them accordingly... especially you business owners! It’s tempting to come into the room thinking you’re the smartest person there. You may need to be the one to make decisions. But it’s okay to let other people be the smartest in the room and listen to their advice so you can make informed decisions. You can’t play the blame-game as a business owner. When you are a leader, you need to own decisions all the way down...   This doesn’t mean everything is your fault. I'll preface this by saying that I know many great recruiters. BUT – The incentives for typical recruiters are broken... If you pay a percentage of the first-year compensation for each candidate, you’re incentivizing the recruiter to get the most expensive person as quickly as possible. The candidate could be someone the recruiter met literally 15 minutes ago. They could be a walking lawsuit. They could be someone just looking for a quick path to a raise. They could have been fired 5 times before they talked to the recruiter. They could just be really good at writing resumes.   All of a sudden, you’re paying 40k for someone who could blow up in your face.   Bottom line: make sure your recruiter is incentivized to run a tailored process. 💯 Agree? You might think your workplace culture doesn’t affect you. But listen to this story I was told by a working single mom. She used to work a job with a toxic work culture and thought it didn’t affect her. She was hired by a healthier company through RedBalloon and one of her sons said, “mommy you aren’t angry anymore.”    She didn’t even realize her job was having such a big impact on how she was interacting with her kids.
