Advancing Nature-based Solutions, blue carbon, and biodiversity initiatives. Restoring and conserving mangroves, seagrass, seaweed beds, and coral reefs in the Mesoamerican Reef System and the Coral Triangle ecoregions.
🌊 A Blue Nature-Positive Economy project update: 5-Month Monitoring of Bioarmonia Modules at El Meco! 🌊 A healthy planet relies on a healthy ocean!! We’re thrilled to share the impressive results from the recent 5-month monitoring of the Bioarmonia, Net-Zero AragoReef coral restoration modules deployed in El Meco! Here’s what we’ve found so far: Ecotourism visitors: The destination has become a thriving hotspot, generating significant value and attracting an impressive average of 4,500 visitors daily at El Meco. This remarkable influx has totaled an astounding 540,000 visitors thus far, and the numbers continue to rise! Climate-Resilient structures: Despite several tropical storms and two hurricanes Beryl (Category 5), and Helene (Category 4). The Bioarmonia modules made with Net-Zero AragoReef remain stable, demonstrating their resilience and suitability for long-term marine restoration. Coral Survival and Growth: Coral fragments are thriving, with a remarkable 100% survival rate on two of the three structures, and 83% on the third. Growth rates are strong, with corals showing healthy increases in both height and diameter. Marine Biodiversity: The modules are now home to 34 species across 15 families, including key species like parrotfish and surgeonfish, which help maintain algae balance on the structures. The diverse fish community includes key ecosystem species as Barracudas and Angelfish juvenile recruits, confirming Bioarmonia's role as a valuable multitrophic habitat. Invertebrate Colonization: Invertebrates are also settling in, adding to the growing complexity of the ecosystem. Their presence enriches the food web, supporting higher biodiversity and ecosystem health. Developed by the NGO Reef Aquaculture Conservancy (RAC) through the Blue Ocean Credits Program (BOCP), this project accelerates coastal decarbonization efforts across the Mesoamerican Reef System, with support from the Net Zero Research Fund 2022 and 2023 from the Climate Change Center of Excellence, Scotiabank Canada. The BIOARMONIA modules were deployed with the generous support of: Asociados Náuticos de Quintana Roo (ANQROO) Instituto Mexicano de Investigación en Pesca y Acuicultura (INAPESCA/IMIPAS) CONANP -Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (APIQROO) Bacabes del Mar S.A. de C.V. Consorcio de Ingeniería y Construcción Aplicada (CICA) This milestone reinforces Bioarmonia's potential to foster marine biodiversity restoration and sustainable ecotourism projects in the Mesoamerican Reef System! 🌱🐠 #MarineRestoration #Bioarmonia #CoralReefConservation #SustainableFuture #ReefAquacultureConservancy
