Statement from Reel Works on the presidential election. For a quarter century, Reel Works has lifted up the voices of young people, empowering them to tell their stories and have their voices heard. The presidential election result may feel dispiriting - a repudiation of the values that we believe are universal and underlie our mission. Many of our students feel less safe today than they did last week, and fearful for their families and communities. Unfortunately, this is bound to get worse over the next four years. That is why Reel Works will continue to provide a place where anyone can come and be a part of something proactive, positive, freeing, and real. We pledge to continue building a safe, nurturing community for young people to be themselves and express themselves. And we rededicate ourselves to ensuring that our filmmakers’ unique visions reach the widest possible audiences as they explore the issues that matter most to them and their communities. And through MediaMKRS we will continue to build an inclusive media workforce that reflects the beautiful mosaic that makes our city, and country, truly great. Filmmaking is a powerful art form for personal expression, building empathy, creating understanding, and inciting social change. Reel Works has never lacked for talented young artists to inspire us with their creative outlook and their hopes for the future. We will continue to foster a home for their spirit and vision. Because when you change the storytellers, you change the world.
