  • Liban, a refugee from Ethiopia, recently began a new life in Ontario, Canada, thanks to that country's Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP). A trained healthcare professional, Liban partnered with RefugePoint to apply to the EMPP, a program that matches skilled refugees with employers in Canada who are facing labor shortages. Liban stopped by the RefugePoint office in Nairobi, Kenya before his departure and shared these words of wisdom: "A refugee can have a dream just like other citizens in the world. I will be a good ambassador for where I come from as a refugee and for RefugePoint, which has been a pivotal point since the start of my journey." Bon voyage and good luck, Liban!

Early this month, a training session took place with HIAS Kenya the Department of Refugee Services (DRS), RefugePoint, and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency - Kenya, focusing on enhancing collaboration in refugee resettlement processes. This activity provided a unique platform for our organizations to assess and harmonize efforts for a more streamlined resettlement process, ensuring that refugees receive comprehensive and timely support. The training delved into key areas of collaboration, emphasizing the need for seamless processes that will facilitate smoother transitions for refugees. We also discussed the challenges that each organization encounters. For instance, we identified that shifts in regional migration patterns and changes in global resettlement quotas necessitate adaptable, forward-thinking approaches. Together, we developed strategies to tackle these challenges, prioritizing flexible and responsive solutions. This training marked a step forward in our joint commitment to refugees’ welfare and reaffirmed our resolve to work as a cohesive unit in facilitating resettlement. By strengthening our processes and addressing barriers, we’re creating a more resilient pathway for refugees to rebuild their lives in new communities.

  • RefugePoint’s Deployment Program Associate Director Zack Gross and Deployment Program Coordinator Mediatrix Onyango recently visited Juba, South Sudan, where they met with five RefugePoint Experts who are currently there on deployment to UNHCR. The visit aimed to assess the impact of RefugePoint deployments and to strengthen collaboration with UNHCR. RefugePoint Experts work in dozens of UNHCR offices around the world where they help refugees relocate to a safe, new country so that they can begin to rebuild their lives. Some Experts are focused specifically on resettlement, while others focus on child protection or family reunification. So far in 2024, our Experts have already supported nearly 14,000 individuals in 32 countries to access pathways to safety: a new record in RefugePoint’s history! Visit https://buff.ly/4fyJnFG to see where our Experts are working and learn more. Photo 1: A day at the office in Juba, South Sudan. Over the course of Fiscal Year 2024, the US welcomed 100,034 arrivals- the highest level of refugee admissions in three decades. This achievement was made possible through a combination of rebuilding and modernizing refugee resettlement infrastructure, innovations such as the new Welcome Corps initiative, enhanced screening and processing mechanisms, and expanded refugee access to resettlement. • Francoman enjoyed working as a barber in his home country before he was forced to flee in 2015. Shortly after arriving in Kenya, Francoman suffered a brutal attack that left his leg injured. In 2016, Francoman became a RefugePoint client and began receiving services like counseling support, food assistance, and rent support. Francoman's leg was not healing, and although he could move around with crutches, he was unable to find a job to sustain himself financially. RefugePoint referred Francoman for resettlement in Canada so that he could receive the specialized medical care that he required. He was resettled last year and hopes to fully heal, recover, and build a successful life as a truck driver in Canada. Visit https://lnkd.in/eceCVbY4 to read Francoman's story.
