RF works to maintain the reliability, security and resilience of the electric grid in the Mid-Atlantic region
About us
ReliabilityFirst works to maintain the reliability, security and resilience of the electric grid across 13 states and the District of Columbia, which stretches from the Atlantic Seaboard to Lake Michigan. The electric grid is the backbone of our economy, is critical for our national security and necessary to support our public welfare. In fact, a reliable and secure electric grid is fundamental to our most basic daily routines and needs. Our mission is to ensure that this cornerstone to our national well-being is reliable and secure – not only for today but also for tomorrow. To achieve this mission, we bring together a diverse and broad spectrum of experts from across the nation with various professional, technical, and industry backgrounds. We identify and prioritize risks facing our electric grid; determine sustainable mitigation strategies to address these identified risks; and develop and deploy communication and outreach strategies to drive awareness and further ensure risk resolution. Our team includes electrical engineers, computer engineers and cyber security experts, statisticians and risk experts, attorneys and regulatory experts, professional auditors, systems engineers, organizational design experts, and professional trainers. ReliabilityFirst is one of only six companies across North America that are responsible for this vital work under Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)-approved delegation agreements with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). Specifically, our company is responsible for the reliability and security of the electric grid in the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes areas of the United States, which includes all or portions of Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and the District of Columbia. We are proud to call Cleveland, Ohio our home.

NERC is monitoring the extreme cold weather events forecast across much of North America over the next several weeks. This extreme weather pattern of arctic cold is expected to bring extremely low temperatures, damaging winds, snow, and freezing rain to midwestern, eastern, and southern states, with the potential to create significant challenges. There could be a series of successive events that could create challenges for those reliant on inventoried fuels. NERC urges everyone in the electricity supply chain to take steps now to ensure the highest levels of reliability. NERC is especially concerned about natural gas supply given the significant amount of production in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Read the full announcement: https://lnkd.in/gt7BqnTW

Trends identified in NERC’s 2024 Long-Term #Reliability Assessment (LTRA) highlight critical reliability challenges that industry is facing over the next 10 years: satisfying escalating #energy growth, managing generator retirements and removing barriers to resource and transmission development. As a result, well over half of North America is at elevated or high #risk of energy shortfalls over the next 5 to-10 years. https://ow.ly/yOR350UsUXO

Ohio State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan stopped by the RF office last week to help us finalize a special delivery from our team of elves here at the RF workshop. RF partnered with Huffy to donate 12 bikes to students at Thoreau Park Elementary School in Parma, Ohio, which is part of Rep. Brennan’s district and just a few miles from the RF offices here in the Cleveland area. Wishing happy holidays to these students and thanks to Rep. Brennan for helping make it happen! #ForwardTogether

The designation of a management official to be responsible for an entity’s cyber security program, i.e. a CIP Senior Manager, may be the most important single decision in its program, writes Lew Folkerth. He discusses this role in his latest issue of the Lighthouse.
