    This is a true personal story... Sadly, yesterday I too became a victim of account takeover fraud A fraudster hijacked my travel points and loyalty status! Like many professionals, I have several hotel loyalty programs I only discovered the issue when I went to book travel *** My password no longer worked (I use a password manager) *** Password reset didn’t work (I hadn't changed my email) I called customer service, they said "I" called them on February 14 to merge the account with a new one (I did not) Based on that one call, the hotel moved all my points and my closed account The hotel failed to verify my identity as they don't have proper #idv Here’s how the scam worked: 1/ Fraudster obtained my loyalty number, my suspicion is an insider at a previous stay 2/ Fraudster associated my loyalty number with an actual paid hotel stay, somewhere I've never been 3/ Fraudster contacted customer service, claiming they had created a duplicate loyalty account by mistake 4/ Hotel used knowledge questions like “what was your last paid stay?” to confirm identity 5/ Fraudster knew this info since they had stayed there! 6/ Hotel transferred my points into a new account and closed my previous one I never received a notification of any account changes! *** Hotel rep confirmed the new account didn’t match my address, it was in a new state I've never lived *** Hotel rep confirmed the new account didn’t match my email, it was an email I’ve never used I waited on the customer service line for over an hour, the rep checked in with me a few times, then the line went dead I called back again, I got a new rep, I explained the situation (again) After another hour, the second rep apologized, then restored my account & points Their excuse: it was just an "agent error" I asked how I can prevent it from happening again: they don't have #MFA Their solution: we check caller ID to make sure its you calling 🤦♂️ Arkose Labs, Kount, an Equifax Company, SEON, and Experian have all written blog posts about #loyaltyprogramfraud Loyalty Pros, there are better solutions than #KBA and "agent errors" *** Keep an eye on your loyalty points, folks! *** #ato #mfa #insiderfraud #loyaltyfraud #accountakeover #travel #hotels (this is an international hotel chain with $15B+ marketcap)
