Congratulations to the three SJSU research teams recently awarded grant funding in Learning Lab’s AI FAST Challenge, which was designed to “support nimble, innovative research and development projects within California’s public higher education system.” The grant funding includes projects to integrate AI into course design tools, a coding tutor and an adaptive tutor for students needing extra support in math and other areas. “I am looking forward to understanding how AI tools can support teaching, learning and our students with the personalized guidance and attention they deserve,” says Maria Chierichetti, associate chair and associate professor of aerospace engineering and one of the PIs of the awarded grants. Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect on the profound contributions of Black Spartans throughout San José State’s history—stories of resilience, service, and impact that continue to shape our university and our community. I’ve shared the story of how Pearl Harbor changed the course of SJSU’s football team, stranding our players in Hawaii as they stepped up to serve in the aftermath of the attack. Aubrey Minter was at the heart of that story. A student-athlete from 1940-1944, Minter excelled in football, baseball, and boxing. He and his teammates traveled to Hawaii in November 1941, expecting to play against the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Willamette University. Instead, they found themselves in the midst of history, stepping up in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. They spent the following weeks assisting local authorities, digging trenches, installing barbed wire, and patrolling to protect the island’s residents. Their story is captured in Scrimmage for War: A Story of Pearl Harbor, Football, and WWII, a powerful reminder of how Spartans have answered the call to service in times of crisis. These images are from a 2022 exhibit that documented and celebrated the contributions of Black Spartans throughout SJSU’s history, helping to share Aubrey Minter’s story along with those of others. SJSU was just awarded an R2 designation by the Carnegie Foundation and American Council on Education (ACE), an important classification for universities across the United States based on research expenditures, activity and other factors. “The principal change from this designation is that we are now considered both a research university and a national university. We're no longer just a regional university,” says Marc d’Alarcao, interim vice president for Research and Innovation, interim president of the Board of Directors of the SJSU Research Foundation, and dean of the College of Graduate Studies. 🌟 SJSU Student Investigator Spotlight: Julie S. 🌟 Not everyone's undergraduate thesis gets published in a peer-reviewed journal — but for Julie Salama, that was just the beginning. Julie is now MA candidate at SJSU, expanding her work by developing culturally tailored psychological measures and presenting her findings at national and international conferences. 🎤 🌏 Beyond research, she's deeply involved in teaching and mentorship, from special education leadership to serving as an instructional assistant in the Interdisciplinary Engineering Department. 🔥 On January 16, a massive fire broke out at the Moss Landing battery facility, burning for days and forcing over 1,000 residents to evacuate. SJSU researchers confirmed the worst: significant increases in cobalt, nickel and manganese in the area's topsoil. Questions about public health, agriculture, and energy storage are growing and the findings have already been cited in a lawsuit filed by a legal team that including Erin Brockovich.
