Today we held a workshop in Canberra on innovative approaches to research data and research evaluation as an input to the upcoming Australian Government Strategic Examination of R&D (SERD). Huge thanks to Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley, Dom ENGLISH from the SERD Taskforce and Lee Harris from the ARC for joining us to provide updates on various pieces of work within government. And to Ant Bagshaw and the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN Universities) for partnering with us in the Innovative Research Universities (IRU) to organise this event. And to Sam Rosevear, Harold Lomas and other colleagues in the Department of Education for supporting our idea and hosting us today. We were very lucky to have a guest keynote from Professor James Wilsdon (pictured below) – Executive Director of the Research On Research Institute (RoRI), Professor of Research Policy at University College London, international expert on research assessment and metascience, and all-round friend of Australia. Thanks to James for sharing an inspiring update on international best practice, other national R&D reviews and exciting new developments in the field. And thankyou to Professor Cameron Neylon from the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative (COKI) and to Prerana Mehta from the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) for also presenting on their work. Cameron and Chun-Kai (Karl) Huang from COKI have worked with us in the IRU all through 2024 on new models of open access research data that have underpinned our work on research impact, sustainability and changing patterns of international research collaboration. They’re the best! The aim of the workshop today was to bring people together to share information and set a shared agenda for work in 2025 and beyond. The Universities Accord and the review of the ARC – championed by Minister Jason Clare – have given us a great head-start on future research policy. The SERD is a fantastic opportunity for a more systematic approach to our research and innovation ecosystem and we look forward to it being announced soon by Minister Ed Husic. There are lots of exciting new approaches and tools available and we should be connecting our national discussion to best practice around the world. #highered #auspol #innovation #researchimpact #metascience
