Today we’re introducing a new initiative in Signals: Expert Contributions. Researchers, sleuths, and subject-matter experts can now share their insights on Signals, amplifying their expertise to make a meaningful impact on correcting the scholarly record. With thousands of contributions already added by leading research integrity sleuths like Elisabeth Bik and Mu Yang, experts can join us to gain recognition for their insights and help restore trust in research. Researchers like René Aquarius are doing essential work to uncover problematic articles in the literature and understand their impact on systematic reviews. Science Magazine has covered the work of René and others in a recent article and highlighted an important topic: systematic reviews are a critical resource for researchers and the public. Unfortunately, publication fraud is threatening their credibility. At Signals, we’ve seen these issues first hand — and what we’ve found is concerning. Systematic reviews, often well cited, appear to be entirely fabricated by bad actors, or are compromised by problematic articles in their evidence base. I’m excited to be returning to the event, along with Tiago, and presenting Signals as one of the Vesalius Innovation Award finalists. What happens when a publisher rejects papermill articles? The papermill will keep resubmitting fake articles to multiple journals until they are published. 🟢 We’ve made some big updates to Signals 🟢 Today, we released a new set of signals focused on institution integrity, making it easy to identify articles from institutions with high rates of problematic retractions. Plus, we've improved several existing signals to reduce false positives. The team has also been working hard on technical improvements to Signals to enhance the user experience and enable us to accelerate the development of new signals.
