Alveoli are tiny air sacs located at the end of the respiratory tree in the lungs and are crucial for the process of gas exchange between the air we breathe and the blood. Each lung contains about 300 to 500 million alveoli, making up a large surface area to facilitate this exchange. The walls of the alveoli are extremely thin (just one cell thick) and are surrounded by a network of small blood vessels called capillaries. Oxygen from the air that we inhale diffuses through the walls of the alveoli and into the blood in the capillaries, while carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, moves from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.
