Rowe Price who came out to Respite Retreats today to wrap gifts for children affected by cancer and to decorate our center for the upcoming Holiday Celebration for these families. Abby of Respite Retreats - Abby’s Carts of Courage Rings Bell at Ravens Game for Crucial Catch Campaign Baltimore, MD – In a heartwarming moment at M&T Bank Stadium, Abby Cafiero, the inspiration behind Abby’s Carts of Courage, took center stage to ring the iconic bell as part of the Baltimore Ravens' Crucial Catch campaign. This NFL initiative, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, focuses on raising awareness about the importance of early cancer detection and prevention. Abby, now 8, was diagnosed with Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT), a rare and aggressive brain cancer, shortly after her fourth birthday. Her journey began with persistent headaches, leading to the discovery of a lemon-sized tumor near her optic nerve. Abby bravely underwent brain surgery to remove most of the tumor, followed by six months of chemotherapy, stem cell rescues, and proton radiation. Though she completed treatment in June 2021, 8% of the tumor remains, requiring regular follow-ups. The idea for Abby’s Carts of Courage emerged from Abby's own needs during her cancer journey. As Abby experienced extreme fatigue and loss of balance, finding a safe way to transport her was critical. Traditional baby strollers, with a weight limit of 55 pounds, were not an option. This led Abby's family to use a wagon, which became an essential tool in safely transporting her during treatment. In 2022, Abby's mother, Katie, partnered with Wendy Letow, Founder and Executive Director of Respite Retreats, to turn this idea into Abby’s Carts of Courage, now a program of Respite Retreats. Gifting wagons filled with comfort items to pediatric cancer patients, offer a practical and comforting resource for families during their own challenging journeys. Since its launch, the program has delivered over 100 carts, providing support to many young patients. Abby's appearance at the Ravens game was a powerful symbol of strength and resilience. When asked what ringing the bell meant to her, Abby said, "It's a sign of hope." Her presence highlighted the importance of community support in raising awareness and helping cancer patients.
