About us
The Restorative Justice Institute of Oklahoma (RJIOK) seeks to transform the retributive and inequitable culture of our state. RJIOK offers training in cultural competence and restorative practices designed with and for individuals, families, schools, and organizations to reduce trauma, dehumanization, and recidivism. The transformation of our culture requires that we shift from authoritarian to authoritative with clear limits, accountability, and engagement. We must work with those human beings who have harmed or disrespected us or the rules toward an accountable solution that does not dehumanize.

As part of the Youth Homeless Demonstration Project, Tulsa and OKC partnered with young leaders who had experienced homelessness, ensuring their voices shaped real solutions. These inspiring youth took the lead at events like the Homeless Children and Youth Steering Committee Strategy Summit on 11/6, driving conversations and guiding efforts to create a brighter future for others facing similar challenges. In preparation, Graves and his team facilitated listening sessions with unhoused youth, parents, McKinney-Vento Liaisons, Head Start professionals, and community allies to capture the voices of those who mattered most. This wasn’t just about policies; it was about people. November is H.O.P.E. Month — a time to focus on Homeless Outreach, Prevention, and Education. Together, we’re building a state where every young person has the support they need to thrive. #EndYouthHomelessness | #CommunityImpact | #oklahomakids | Restorative Justice Institute of Oklahoma

As we navigate Superintendent Walters' education policies, many are experiencing a mix of anxiety, anger, and frustration. Yet beneath these challenges lies a crucial need for a deeper conversation about educational justice and meaningful systemic transformation. This is why Dr. Bettina Love's work resonates so powerfully right now. Dr. Love reminds us that when 'reform experiments' are imposed by leaders far removed from the classroom, our students suffer as collateral damage. At RJIOK, we believe real transformation emerges from intentional conversations rooted in authentic relationships within the communities most impacted by change. A warm thank you to OSU-Tulsa Library, Oklahoma State University Oral History Research Program, Fulton Street Books and Coffee, and especially Autumn B. Brown, Ph.D. for bringing this conversation to Greenwood. Ready to dig deeper into these vital conversations? We have copies of Dr. Love's book available -- reach out at info@rjiok.org. This isn't just reading – it's arming ourselves with knowledge to better understand and address the root causes of what we're facing in Oklahoma education today. #EducationalJustice #Greenwood #CommunityPartnership #RJIOK Xavier Graves Jazzy Bivar-Smith, CDP®, PHR, M.A.
