Ensuring, promoting, and expanding postsecondary attainment among all Rhode Islanders
About us
Rhode Island Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner (RIOPC) serves as the definitive resource for information on and the interpretation of Council on Postsecondary Education policy for public higher education. RIOPC looks for shared opportunities to advance the objectives of postsecondary education with the public and independent institutions. The Commissioner of Postsecondary Education is the state’s higher education executive officer. In fulfilling this role, the Commissioner works closely with the presidents of the state higher education institutions to determine the benefits or disadvantages of proposed new programs, departments, division, courses of study within the scope and role adopted by the Council on Postsecondary Education and in developing tables of organization. RIOPC relies on the collegial relations and civil discussions among the members of the postsecondary community and with important stakeholders from business, government, and PK-12 education.

At last night's Council on Postsecondary Education meeting, we thanked Ana Spencer for her service to the council, staff, and higher ed institutions in the state. She was the student representative to the council and recently completed her term. We were fortunate to have Ana and the valuable perspective she added to higher ed conversations and policy-making. Wishing you all the best!

A huge thank you to our 60th anniversary honorary and coordinating committees, as well as the CCRI Foundation and CCRI Alumni Association for helping us celebrate our milestone year. The Community College of Rhode Island's commitment to our community is exactly what has made this college so impactful across the last six decades, and each of you, as alumni, friends and leaders, demonstrate that same dedication in the work you do every day.

We were so honored to be a guest at Building FuturesI/Apprenticeship RI's Apprenticeship Works Reception and to receive their Emerging Practice in Apprenticeship Award. Postsecondary Commissioner Gilkey joined the celebration --> of the impacts that registered apprenticeships are having in RI, which included a nod to our work to enact the Apprenticeship Pathways To Earning A Bachelor’s Degree Act. We are thankful to have great partners like BF/ARI who share our passion for linking credit and degree attainment to earn-while-you-learn registered apprenticeship employment. As we move forward toward full implementation, we have the potential to make a deep impact on Rhode Islanders’ earnings and opportunities. Thank you!
