The Training Guy - Building resilience and inclusion by developing a culture of curiosity

I had the absolute pleasure of joining several of my colleagues at #Devlearn24 this year! It was the 20th anniversary of the conference, and it was massive! Over 3,000 attendees, three floors of sessions, and some amazing vendors! I'd like to thank the Learning Guild folks for the opportunity to volunteer at the event, and to attend! This is also my first video with captions, let me know what you think! Huge shout-out to the vendors I met! • Motivation goes beyond just intrinsic or extrinsic factors, there are several levels, each building a foundation for the next. Understanding where your team's motivations are now can help you get them to the next level by appealing to them individually.

Is your team motivated? Are you? What motivates you? Let's explore motivation using Maslow's 5 levels of Needs to better understand where motivation should start at an individual level, and how an organization can refocus their approach to motivating their employees.

  • Are you driven by the security of the job, the friends you have at work, the recognition you get, or the work itself? What drives you?

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be publishing videos on Maslow's levels of motivation, and it got me thinking: What is your primary motivation? I'm assuming the first motivator of survival is already being met. I'm curious to see how you are driven to do your best work.

  • Build a culture of inclusion, because neurodivergent employees are incredibly loyal, valuable assets to any organization, and are estimated to represent 15% of your workforce. Do you really want to lose them to your competitors?

We only have so much energy and brain power to dedicate to any and all tasks. The more we take on, the less detail, accuracy, or bandwidth we have for that or more tasks. Now, imagine you need to hide something, all the time, like a tick or a blink, or a need to hum. That takes energy and brain power away from what you need to do for work, but you still need to work. Quickly, you start to burnout. This is the reality of every neurodivergent person to a greater or lesser degree. Let's explore Praslova's The Canary Code, and discuss why!

Who is responsible for people being included at work? Is it the CEO? HR? Managers? Employees? The employee looking to be included? The employee that rubs everyone the wrong way because they're odd? How you answer that question is a good litmus test for your culture.
