August is Natural Hair Loss Awareness Month. With more than 80 million people in just the United States impacted by hair loss, we (Drs. Kash and Roopani) wanted to give a few thoughts and tips for anyone who might be experiencing hair loss. Hair loss can start early. By 35 years old, two thirds of men will experience some form of alopecia. More than half of women over the age of 50 will experience hair thinning. The best thing to do is to monitor for early signs of hair loss and seek help early on. If you’re noticing more hair shedding than your baseline or any areas with thinning or balding, then make sure to see a healthcare professional to determine the cause of your hair loss and help create a treatment plan tailored to you and your hair. What are some ways you can try to prevent or help hair loss at home? Evaluate your hair care routine and make sure to minimize repetitive tight pulling on the hair as well as heat and chemical damage. Optimize your lifestyle. Many of these things will have benefits for you holistically, not just for your hair. These include minimizing and managing stress, optimizing your diet, and getting adequate sleep. There are also a number of medications, light based, and procedural therapies available so make sure to see a professional to discuss your options if you are experiencing hair loss. Finally know that you’re not alone. It’s still often taboo to talk about it in our society but hair loss is extremely common.
