The most equitable urban environment provides access to every pedestrian equally. The sidewalk, the space where public life happens, is frequently defined around the utility and perceived efficiency of the modern urban grid. Since the inception, proliferation and dominance of cars, the sidewalk has remained the byproduct of vehicular circulation, consigned at the edges of the street. Instead of offering a forum for dynamic public life and pedestrian connection and participation, the current sidewalk limits choice and fosters an automatic and habitual behavior which no longer reflects the way we live, work & play. Our urban proposal for the Miami River questions the relationship we have with our urban environment, primarily at the edges of the street. As urban centers increase in population and abandon the conventional emphasis on vehicular accessibility (massive parking garages, single-modal thoroughfare configurations), our proposal conceives the sidewalk not only as a space for convenient access to goods and services but also as a continuous and dynamic layer that includes spaces for outdoor or semi-indoor activities in multiple elevations, flexible enough to access predetermined or improvised programs. With a new multi-use sidewalk in various configurations, this 5-block corridor south of the Miami River enhances the perceptions of the viability and desirability of travel with new vistas and offering multiple ways to experience the city. A network of sidewalks, bicycle paths, wildlife corridors and plazas move horizontally and vertically weaving through new and existing mixed-use and smaller-scale multi-use live and work environments which culminate at the water’s edge. Sustainable Architecture & Placemaking
About us
RooTSDNA is an architecture firm based in South Florida. We design simple & joyful spaces of various scales that are more sustainable, produce less waste and provide optimal and quantifiable performance during their operation. At the urban level, we create buildings and spaces that celebrate public life with a strong focus on generating a collective identity and a sense of neighborhood. With this vision, we intend to recalibrate the process of how we design, build and experience the built environment. The Body and Beauty Lab Medical Spa believes that the skin is the body’s framework of a unique blend of texture, color and brilliance and that no one shares the same skin design and composition. We used those ideas as strategies guiding the initial design process where we saw the opportunity to treat the different surfaces of the space as the project’s skin. Informed by the project's Egyptian culture background, we use gold-leaf layers as a reference of the medicinal properties of gold for skin healing and skin cell renewal.
