  • According to Kate Towsey, pioneer in the field of #ResearchOps and author of the bestseller, Research That Scales, the future of ResearchOps must expand beyond its current role. We need to integrate more strategic functions within the research ecosystem, which means we can make great strides in efficiency, collaboration, and enabling more data-driven decisions. • Great advice on cross-silo collaboration from Jake Burghardt, author of the forthcoming “Stop Wasting Research” 👇

Author: Stop Wasting Research | Building new pathways for customer insights to add more value to products

There’s more to research knowledge management than repositories, and it’s often better to get started on some basics. In organizations with few researchers, there can be a more direct value proposition for beginning simpler collaborations with other siloed research teams and disciplines. Insight-generators can start propping each other up in basic ways. Research repositories can enable these cross-disciplinary collaborations – but there are a range of lighter weight steps to start building goodwill and shared results. … I recently chatted with a UX research leader at a B2B vendor whose products are purchased by enterprises to support the health of employees. Their small UX research team routinely worked with a data science team, connected with customer success, tapped into member feedback sources, as well as internal clinical experts. Even with the great cross-pollination happening, there’s the ongoing question of how to combine distributed research assets in a more operational way. We chatted about how there’s no one tool or team that can serve all types of research processes in an end-to-end way. Fortunately, shared knowledge management can start with smaller steps, and working backwards from specific types of impacts on product planning: ⏹️ Build internal community through researcher-only discussion channels Intentionally create a messaging space for insight-generators to ask each other questions. Work to prime ongoing sharing, calling out collaborative wins. ⏹️ Create a shared portal of key links from across research sources  Identify knowledge locations for each research source and build out a shared intranet destination that inventories research teams, standards, and published assets. Workshop a shared brand for the broader research community that the portal represents. ⏹️ Create common marketing channels about new research Consider starting a regular meeting series / video channel for all sorts of researchers to share their work. Expand the audience of new insights by publicizing each others’ research communications, or even creating a summarized new research newsletter from across silos. ⏹️ Identify product planning needs and start summarizing top insights Keep an ear out for opportunities to sway leaders’ decisions with existing research, create summaries of top insights in whatever tools are common in your organization (e.g. Notion, JIRA). ⏹️ Publish research standards as an invitation to get more involved As researchers start to build out tried and true collaboration approaches, consider asking them to document standards and successes. Keep encouraging any researchers who have not stepped up from their silos to find valuable ways to plug in. … Plenty more on cross-silo collaboration in my book “Stop Wasting Research,” coming this year from Rosenfeld Media Sign up for monthly newsletter (link in comments) #ux #uxresearch #marketresearch #datascience #voc #insights #researchops #designops
