Research, treatment, and training, to reduce tobacco-related mortality in New Jersey, the US, and globally
About us
The Institute for Nicotine & Tobacco Studies (INTS) is one of the nation’s leading tobacco focused research centers. It seeks to reduce and ultimately eliminate tobacco-related morbidity and mortality in New Jersey, the US, and globally. INTS does this via research that informs interventions, regulations, and policies; the delivery of evidence-based tobacco treatment; dissemination of research findings to key stakeholders; and training of tobacco treatment providers and the next generation of tobacco control researchers. Centers or Programs currently operating at the Institute include the Center of Excellence for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco (CRST), Tobacco Dependence Program (TDP), Tobacco Industry Marketing (TIM), and the Tobacco Control Law & Policy Resource Center.

Led by INTS post-doctoral fellow, Caitlin Weiger and including co-authors [Stefanie Gratale, Ollie Ganz, Melanie LaVake, MPH, Eugene Talbot, and Olivia Wackowski], a new paper published in Tobacco Control found that ‘additive-free’ and ‘tobacco and water’ claims made by some popular cigarette brands are often interpreted to mean these cigarettes contain fewer harmful ingredients or chemicals than other cigarettes, suggesting they may similarly function as unauthorized modified exposure claims. In the US, use of reduced exposure claims requires FDA authorization, which none of the cigarette companies currently using a ‘tobacco and water’ claim have. Additional regulatory action and educational campaigns may be needed to reduce use of these misleading claims and to correct misperceptions. Read more here: ➡️ https://ow.ly/ANht50UBt2O
