"Carol Beecroft, executive director of the Women's Center — High Desert, Inc., said she and her staff were compelled to offer further relief to shelter clients who were reluctant to leave their dogs with their abusers. Most days Allie (SAF-T Founder & CEO) sits in her office with Rudy on the back of her chair and thinks "Wow, look at what my crazy idea created!" It all stems from one domestic violence case Allie was prosecuting in the late 1990's. On this day before Giving Tuesday, she is thankful for all the domestic violence survivors and their pets who are in safe housing in one of the 400 pet-friendly shelters in 47 states and 6 countries. Allie literally wrote THE book on how to create on-site pet housing at domestic violence shelters back in 2008. From day one we have offered the SAF-T Start-Up Manual to shelters and have supported them from initial discussions, thru fundraising, to grand openings, and offering help even years after implementation. And we do it ALL for free to the shelters. There are many wonderful non-profits to support as we approach Giving Tuesday and we would be so thankful for your support so that we can continue to save thousands of lives each year. We have GINORMOUS plans for 2025 and your support will help us get there. In today's episode of The SAFeTY Chronicles podcast, I had the pleasure of talking with BestyBnB (Andy and Zoe). After Zoe and I presented at the International Veterinary Social Work Summit in Cleveland in September, I knew I had to have them on the podcast. If you are not familiar with BestyBNB, they are a community of pet caregivers who offer foster care to pets in crisis when the pet owner is experiencing domestic violence, homelessness, medical emergency, etc. The SAF-T Program offers onsite pet housing at domestic violence shelters, whereas BestyBNB offers off-site housing with screened caregivers. Together, our 2 organizations are meeting the needs of domestic violence survivors with pets. This is a podcast worth listening to. As we near the end of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we cannot forget the precious farm animals that can be caught in the cross-fire of domestic violence. They deserve to be safe too. When we work with shelters in rural and farming communities, we look for shelters, rescues and barns that can provide safe housing. If you are a shelter in a rural community, have you identified those partners who can house farm animals and livestock? Whether it is domestic violence or a natural disaster, the bond that people have with their pets can keep them strong during difficult times. And when it comes time to find safe housing at a shelter, you should not be put in the position of leaving your beloved pet behind.
