🌊 "We should call it Planet Ocean, not Planet Earth." 🔬 Richard Brisius, Race Chairman of The Ocean Race, emphasizes the importance of collecting scientific data while sailing around the globe. ⛵ Right now, our Team Holcim-PRB skipper Nicolas Lunven is racing in the Vendée Globe with an Ocean Pack onboard as part of the #GOCIRCULAR campaign, gathering crucial samples on temperature, salinity, oxygen, and CO2 in some of the most remote areas of our planet. In collaboration with The Ocean Race, we're sharing this data with scientific institutions to help monitor the health of our oceans. 🔗 Last year, we collected microplastic samples during The Ocean Race - here are the results: https://lnkd.in/diZWD-qp #GOCIRCULARbyHolcim #BuildingProgress #Sustainability #OceanScience #OceanRace #MarineResearch

🌊 When sailing pushes boundaries, science sets sail too! As they test their endurance and the limits of their boats, battling strong winds on their route to the Cape of Good Hope, the skippers of the Vendée Globe 2024 are making an incredible contribution to ocean science. Over the past few days, 10 #Argofloats have been deployed in the South Atlantic Ocean, where data is critically needed. Thanks to these brave and engaged skippers, the floats are already transmitting real-time data on temperature and salinity to scientists worldwide, contributing directly to Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) implementation. This data will significantly improve our understanding of the #ocean and climate systems, enhancing both weather and climate forecasts. These floats will continue to serve the scientific community for up to 8 years, providing valuable 10-day updates to global data centers. The extraordinary adventure of this solo round-the-world race offers a unique opportunity to merge competitive sailing with science, showcasing the incredible potential of collaboration. A heartfelt thank you to the IMOCA and Vendée Globe skippers, and all the partners involved for advancing ocean science and strengthening our connection to the oceans! 🌍⛵ #VendéeGlobe2024 #OceanScience #ArgoFloats #GOOS #IMOCA #Ifremer #MeteoFrance UNESCO Ocean World Meteorological Organization https://lnkd.in/eSG4b9Vq

In episode 4, we take a deep dive into the Southern Ocean Carbon sink. Did you know that the Southern Ocean takes up roughly 40% of the more than 10 Billion tons of CO2 that the global ocean is removing from the atmosphere every year? Dive in and learn more about why Olli's measurements in the Southern Ocean are so important for us. Nicolas Gruber, Thomas Frölicher, Samuel Jaccard Oliver Heer Oliver Heer Ocean Racing Swiss Polar Institute #Heerwego #ETHZurich #DUSYS Environmental Physics (UP) Group

⛵ Extreme Sailing for Science – episode 4 🌍 The Southern ocean as a carbon sink Welcome to the Southern Ocean! From now on, it’s gonna be very windy. And wind means high speed for Oliver Heer and for the air-sea gas exchange. 💨 Among all ocean regions the Southern Ocean is unique. It connects the three other ocean basins with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the strongest ocean current on Earth. Driven by intense winds, this current circles the globe without land to stop its motion, earning these latitudes their vivid nicknames: the Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties, and Screaming Sixties. While Ollie will be flowing with the elements now and making the most rapid progress of its entire journey, he will also be facing harsh conditions. The unique wind and ocean conditions turn the Southern Ocean into a key region for climate change, where most of the global ocean heat and carbon uptake is realised. The additional CO2 that is taken up here gets transported into the ocean interior and travels further north, such that the Southern Ocean is actually one of the few regions where the ocean interior reservoir is filled up with our CO2 emissions (see our latest study on the oceanic storage of anthropogenic CO2: https://lnkd.in/d28QUdU2). Although the Southern Ocean plays a crucial role in Earth's climate system, it remains the least understood region. This is largely due to its extreme and inhospitable conditions, which pose significant challenges not only for Ollie on his sailing yacht, but also for seagoing oceanographers. Expeditions take place mostly in the Southern Hemisphere summer and even then, it is anything but trivial to obtain reliable measurements. We're even more thrilled that our instruments are autonomously recording data day by day and hour by hour as Ollie navigates through the Southern Ocean! Take a closer look at these two screenshots from our previous animation, where we show the reconstructed air-sea CO2 exchanges for two different days. By comparing the two, you can notice how the passage of low pressure systems often leads to high boat speeds (length of the purple line), and also enhances the air-sea gas exchange (color intensity). If you want to see the full animation: https://lnkd.in/dJpep4sP The importance of the Southern Ocean as a sink of anthropogenic CO2 is very clear from the third picture that shows the anthropogenic sea-air CO2 fluxes driven by atmospheric pCO2 increase, simulated by global models.
