We help workers improve situational awareness, reduce human error, and enhance high-risk decision making.
About us
The mission of Situational Awareness Matters is to help individuals and team see bad things coming… in time to prevent bad outcomes. Our trainers and consultants help organizations implement practical, immediately actionable best practices to: - Reduce human error; - Enhance situational awareness; and, - Improve high-stress, high-consequence decision making. The greatest demand for our services comes from companies, agencies and associations whose members work in high-risk, high-consequence, time-compressed environments where conditions can change rapidly. Organizations seeking our help are motivated to reduce: OSHA reportable incidents; worker involved near miss events; or tragic catastrophic injuries/fatalities. During a site assessment we review your training procedures, safety policies, pre-work briefing process, worksite communications, supervisory practices, near-miss and accident reports. We will also interview a cross-section of frontline workers, supervisors, managers, safety personnel, and accident investigation team members. Our training sessions focus on helping workers, supervisors and safety managers understand how to develop situational awareness and how to use awareness and the foundation to improve decision making. Our proven methods are rooted in cognitive neuroscience and based on expensive research conducted by our company founder and CEO, Dr. Richard B. Gasaway, a retired first responder who served 30+ years making high-risk decisions. His research findings have been chronicled in his 7 books and have been featured and referenced in more than 400 publications. Our trainers and consultants have traveled the globe, sharing important lessons with more than 100,000 safety and operational professionals working the fields of: Energy Manufacturing Chemical Nuclear Healthcare Pharma Construction Aviation First Responders Private Security Technology Retail Transportation Government Education And more

My "Journey of Enlightenment" on the topics of situational awareness, high-risk decision making, human error, human factors, critical thinking and resilient problem solving started in 2004 when I enrolled in a doctoral program that would allow me to understand how smart, talented and experienced workers have their decision making impacted by situational awareness barriers and how to improve their decision making skills. If what you're doing to improve the high-risk decision making of your team is working, I'd love to interview you to understand the key(s) to your success. If what you're doing to improve the high-risk decision making of your team is NOT working, I'd love to interview you to see if we can help improve your success. Because...
