Congratulations Keilah Belén Minear, LSW on your graduation and new role as a School Social Worker! It was an honor to have you as part of the MFP family, and we’re grateful for your dedication to advancing equity in the mental health field. Wishing you continued success in making a difference!
Now that I’ve graduated from my MSW program, have fully moved states, and have started a new position as a School Social Worker, I’ve had some time to reflect over my time with Council on Social Work Education SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program, ANA in the past year. Times like these make me grateful for the incredible journey I had getting to connect with like-minded individuals who are seeking to enhance the mental health field and work with underrepresented and underserved racial/ethnic minority communities in order to reduce the effects of substance use and mental health issues. This summer, during my time at MFP, I had the amazing opportunity to speak to state representative staff members and advocated for the value that social workers bring in multiple professional settings. This included advocating for the increased hiring of SWs and access to mental health services in school settings throughout high-need districts in Colorado and Oregon. Though my time with MFP has ended, I am forever grateful for the connections I made with people who have a similar goal in bettering humanity. I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to attend the 2024 NASW Conference and Fellows Forum in DC and connect with emerging leaders in the social work field. I want to give a special thanks to Deja Andrews, MSW for being such an attentive and caring guide during my time with MFP. People like her deserve to be in leadership roles! While this profession can come with lows, I try to remind myself that 1) Action leads to insight more than insight leads to action; and 2) True joy results when we become aware of our connectedness to everything. Find the joy where you can.
