What does NIH funding pay for?
For my partner, Ardem, it has helped fund the research leading to a Nobel Prize in Physiology for discovering the molecules required for the sense of touch. This basic science discovery could lead to new non-opioid pain drugs, quite like Vertex’s recently approved analgesic JOURNAVX.
It’s been weeks of turmoil since the recent attacks on science by the executive branch. Faculty searches halted mid-way. Graduate student admissions slashed in half. Talented NIH researchers looking for new jobs.
Amid this uncertainty and sadness, I want to take a moment to celebrate the beauty that is scientific discovery. Here is Ardem’s journey that started exactly 25 years ago today in #SanDiego.
In 2000, we had moved from UCSF to San Diego to start his lab at Scripps Research and the Novartis Institute for Functional Genomics or “Nif-Gee”.
He quickly shifted his research focus from developmental neurobiology and the differentiation of sensory neuronal subtypes to the functional molecules that allowed these neurons to sense different stimuli like temperature and pressure.
Just two years into building his independent research groups, his team cloned and characterized TrpV3, an ion channel triggered by warm temperatures. In the next year, TrpM8 and TrpA1 followed: these channels opened in response to cold temperatures and extreme hot/noxious chemicals, respectively. Nine years in, the Piezo channels were described: these ions channels are the biggest in our genome and respond to pressure on the cell membrane. Years of ensuing research revealed the Piezos’ role in all kinds of sensory systems, including those related to specific forms of pain.
20 years in, the crazy call that he was co-laureate of the 2021 Nobel Prize. Fast forward to today’s 25th anniversary for his lab: 120 papers, 30+ alumni trainees, a dedicated (but stressed out) community of brilliant researchers at Scripps, and an unchanged curiosity for figuring what’s next in biology that is both fundamental and significant.
Congrats Ardem! To happier days and more amazing science. #standupforscience #saveNIH
