Helping solve our region’s biggest problems.
About us
The San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center (PIC) is a 501C3 organization that exists to conduct research and policy analysis and help solve the region’s biggest problems. Its founding partners include the San Diego Foundation, the County of San Diego, and the world’s leading think tank – The Brookings Institution. Since launching in August 2021, PIC has been on a mission to break down silos and build strong working relationships among San Diego regional leaders, government agencies, municipalities, and other community stakeholders. By doing so, PIC cultivates cross-sector, multi-jurisdictional collaborations focused on developing effective, research-informed solutions to key issues in the region and securing the federal and state funding needed to implement those solutions. PIC concentrates on four main areas: - Climate Resiliency: Taking action to mitigate and adapt to climate change - Housing: Increasing the quality and quantity of available housing to improve access and affordability - Community Wealth: Building power and prosperity in historically disinvested communities - Infrastructure: Increasing and leveraging improved materials, technologies and services that have measurable benefits for public good Over the next few years, PIC will continue building strong and diverse partnerships among the leaders of the region; use equity-centered research to identify the region’s biggest needs, and the best opportunities for change, and secure funding for potential solutions; challenge systemic inequities; and develop a pipeline of potential scalable projects and pilots that improve the lives of San Diegans. PIC turns data into creative solutions for mission-aligned partners in San Diego County and beyond. Our researchers help organizations identify their community’s economic and workforce development needs, which drives higher success rates in grant applications, donor asks and determining how to develop and expand programs. Our custom research programs provide data that surveys alone cannot explain. To see our latest reports, visit SDRPIC.org/News.

Recently, PIC’s Dr. Karen Boyd and Alicia L. Jurek, Ph.D. presented new research at the annual meeting for the American Society of Criminology. They studied police organization structures and the adoption of predictive policing technologies. Their findings showed the need for greater transparency and fairness in the use of these tools, especially their impact on marginalized communities.

Big kudos to Gabriela Gonzalez Martinez for leading our Live Well San Diego presentation on "From Data to Action: Supporting Latino/a Economic Growth in San Diego." I had the privilege of supporting Gaby in the presentation and highlighting how her findings at the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center enhanced our community-centered grantmaking strategy for the San Diego Foundation's El Camino Fund, an initiative focused on Latino economic mobility. Big congratulations to Gaby for a great and engaging presentation!

San Diego added 12,200 jobs last month, reaching up to 1.59 million people in our labor force. PIC’s Chief Economist Daniel Enemark compared the County’s unemployment rate over seasonal swings. Thankfully, San Diego County’s still signaling a strong economy. He spoke to Phillip Molnar at The San Diego Union-Tribune about the latest in unemployment and inflation. Our colleagues at The Brookings Institution, Joe Kane and Adie Tomer, dove into the finances of equitable adaptation for transportation and water systems. In partnership with the Brookings Metro team, PIC analyzes climate risks in San Diego County and shares their findings with government agencies and environmental organizations. The specific, parcel-by-parcel analysis supports grant applications to prevent these #ClimateRisks from growing further. https://lnkd.in/gQypH9ts

PIC conducted research for the City of Chula Vista and Southwestern Community College District, focusing on the academic disciplines that would attract binational higher education partners to Chula Vista’s University Innovation District. The City of Chula Vista and Southwestern College recently announced the new disciplines and programs at a press conference. Described as a “roadmap” for creating a four-year university, the study explored new ways to expand higher education and workforce opportunities in South County. PIC’s research determined that nine academic programs would benefit the region, including engineering, public policy and film and media arts. Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/gUqaHf3W
