On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science we celebrate the women of the past who have paved the way, the women of the present who maintain that road, and the girls of the future destined to walk it. Nora Stanton Blatch Barney (1883-1971) was the first woman to graduate from Cornell University with an engineering degree, lending her skills to the New York water supply and the Radley Steel Construction company. Between engineering work, she devoted her time to women’s suffrage and authored a book World Peace Through a People’s Parliament. While she was the first woman to be admitted to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) she was only granted junior membership and was later denied advancement to associate member. In 2015 her legacy was honored by being posthumously promoted to Fellow status. Her perseverance in the field of Civil Engineering reminds us that if you want something, and work for it, you can reshape the world. When it comes to testing Fire Hydrants, our guys always go with the Flow! Fire Flow tests like the one seen here tell our team about the water pressure and flow capacity of the fire hydrants at a location. These tests ensure that firefighters will have access to adequate water sources in an emergency.
